Ways to Practice Spelling Words: Grade One
1. Make each word with plastic letters: the child makes a word, mixes up the letters and then rebuilds the word. 2. The child traces each word in the air, on a table, or on a rug with his/her finger. The letters should be chanted aloud as the word is traced. 3. The child writes the word with crayon, chalk or paint 4. The child dictates a sentence for each word. The parent writes down the words. The child writes the week’s special words him/herself. Gradually the child may want to take over more of the sentence writing. 5. Use the directions look (child studies word carefully), say (child reads word), think about it (child looks carefully at the word, noting such things as how many letters, beginning and ending letters, vowel sounds, etc.), write (child prints it on a paper), check (child checks each letter to make sure s/he is correct) 6. In winter, the words can be written in the snow. In summer, the words could be written in sand. 7. The week’s words can also be traced in pudding on a plate, or use Cheerios, raisins or other small food items to make the letters in the words. 8. Use the letters from your child’s letter envelope to form the words. (These envelopes will be given at Parent Teacher Interviews) 9. Make flashcards to use as a reading review of words already studied. 10. Encourage your child to look for “Word Wall words” on signs, in books…anywhere! 11. Go to the Ronald Harvey website ( http://rhem.spschools.org/). Click on links. Then directly under the bar, click on Student links. Next, click on “Mrs. DesCotes.” Then click on the Links icon and find and select “Spelling City.” Once on the website, click on “Find A List.” Choose “Search by Teacher,” type in my name (descotes), and click on “Search.” Once “Beth DesCotes,” appears, click on it and scroll down to the appropriate spelling list. Your child may use Teach, Test, or Games to practice his/her spelling words.
