Dr. Suess Week

  Read Across America Week!

Dear Parents,

We are inviting the children to a week long celebration of the
beloved children’s author, Theodore Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss.
Reading opens the doors to achievement, and Read Across America Day
celebrations are crucial building blocks toward making the joys of reading an
integral part of every child’s life.
To honor the good doctor on the anniversary of his birthday we have
several activities planned. Each morning on the morning announcements we will
have mystery readers and fun fact trivia about Dr. Seuss. We have also chosen
to celebrate this momentous occasion with the following activities:
On Monday, February 28th, we will have Masquerade Monday. We ask that
the children come dressed as their favorite character from the Dr. Seuss’
books. You may make your child’s costume as simple or as intricate as you
would like … we encourage you to be creative but do not feel as though you
need to spend money on this activity. Also, please be cautious about sending
children in clothes that are difficult to maneuver in during the day.
On Tuesday, March 1st we will have Totally Tacky Tuesday. The
children are asked to dress in “tacky” clothes. This may be difficult for
your child. They may feel as though they will be laughed at for dressing
so “silly”, but please encourage them to dress “tacky” as part of the
celebration. In order to dress tacky we encourage your child’s clothing to be
mismatched … as much of it as they would like. Send them in tacky hairstyles,
socks, etc. The tackier the better!
On Wednesday, March 2nd we will have Whimsical Wednesday. The
children are asked to dress in a way that shows “what they would like to be
when they grow up”. Again, the costumes do not have to be fancy, we just want
the children to be able to show off their future plans and dreams.
On Thursday, March 3rd we will have The Places You Go Thursday. On this day
we would like to ask that you send your child in a shirt that names a
location they have visited. Such as Gatlinburg, Panama City, etc. We will
read Dr. Seuss’ book “Oh, the Places You Will Go” and look at all the many
places we have visited.
On Friday, March 4th we will have Fantastic Friday. As a culmination
of the week, we ask that you send your child in pajamas, send in your child’s
favorite Dr. Seuss book (or if you don’t have a Dr. Seuss book, another will
do) as well as a blanket or a towel, as we will be spending the day reading.
Thank you for your help as we share the joy of reading with our students.
Please help your child have a FUN week by engaging with them in the love of
reading! Your participation means so much!

Thank you,
Miss Burns, Mrs. Kirkwood, Miss Mickle and Mrs. Pinkard
