Dear Parents,
I just cannot believe another school year has past. We have worked
hard, we have had fun, we have read, and read and read, and now it's time for
them to move on to the next grade and to another school. I have watched them
grow so much over this past year and I am proud of each and every one of
them. That is the most rewarding part of teaching is watching how each of
the children progress throughout the year. They are all so different and
unique in their own way.
I realize school is about out, but as you know the learning process
never stops. There is also a saying, "What you don't use, your lose." This
is so true. I hope that you will encourage your child to read during the
summer break. I cannot begin to tell you how important that will be in your
child's future. Please have your child read at least 4-5 days each week.
You could buy little chapter books to give them something they want to pick
up and continue to read, or anything that would be of interest to them. If
they come to a word they don't know, ask them if they see any phonics rules
in the word and help them decode unknown words. If you will, look at your
child's last DIBLES test score. Your child's score should be between 40-60
to test out as and Established Reader. Your child will be tested at the very
beginning of second grade and will also need to be reading between 40-60
words per minute at that time. It never fails that every year, many of the
children's scores drop over the summer...sometimes over half. This is due to
lack of reading during the summer. At the end of second grade their goal
will be for them to be reading 90 words per minute. The only way to ensure
for this to happen is to read all summer long. Research has shown that a
child adds 2 words per minute each week if they are reading on a daily
basis. This would be a wonderful gift for you to give your child to ensure
his/her ability to read fluently throughout their early childhood years. I
know I sound like a broken record, but I just want the absolute best for each
of these children.
Also, work on the Math facts. These are the math staregies we have
worked on this year: adding 2, adding 0, adding 1, doubles, doubles plus 1,
adding 9 to a number, adding sums of 10's subtracting a number from 10,
subtracting 2, subtracting 0, subtracting 1, and subtracting a nubmer from
itself. They will start off next year with the timed tests of all these math
facts. If you practice these things with your child it will only make the
transition into 2nd grade that much easier for him/her.
Congratulations to You and Your Second Graders!!!!!!!
Love, Mrs. Lewis
Your child's report card will go home on Wednesday. Remember if you have
any outstanding monies, you will have to pick your child's report card up in
the office. This Thursday is our last official day of school, everyone is
alway curious about the activites for that day. We will be sending
everything home on Monday because Tuesday we will go to Heritage Park and
Wednesday is bring a toy day, Thursday will just be cleaning and saying our
good-bye's.
I hope everyone has a wonderful summer!
