Mrs. Jernigan First Grade Reading Intervention Teacher

Hi! I'm Mrs. Jernigan.
I have been teaching for twenty-two years. I am certified
in Early Childhood Education from Auburn University. I received my Masters
and Educational Specialists degrees in Leadership and Administration from Troy
University. I am most proud of gaining National Board Certification as an Early
Childhood Generalist in 2002. I have been married for 34 years and have one
adult son, Chad. Pickle is my 8 year old Quaker Parrot. He is our classroom pet
too! You will enjoy getting to know him. I also have a cat, Kitty Boy, named by
last year's class! He is also 8 years old and is a Manx. That means he has a
bobtail, but he is beautiful! For some reason, my students have always enjoyed
writing about my pets! If you're reading this, maybe you will too! :)

My Philosophy About Teaching

I believe teaching is a calling. I believe learning should be fun;although,a
lot of structure is provided in my classroom. Consistency is very important
for a child's learning and development.Every student passes through the same
developmental stages, but not at the same rate. All students do not master
riding a bicycle at the same time, nor do all children master learning to
read at the same time. Some children need a little more one on one
intervention to help the reading process click. Reading is a skill that
everyone must obtain to successfully travel through life. You will be hearing
from me throughout the year asking for assistance through home efforts to
help them reach the minimum first grade reading benchmark level of 40 words
per minute. I am looking forward to working with your child!
