Accelerated Reader

Third grade students will be given four grades each grading period from the Accelerated Reading Program (AR).   Each child will have to independently read and take AR tests as part of their reading grade.  Your child will take the STAR test to determine his or her reading level.  After determining each child’s reading level, he/she will be required to read books on the appropriate level.  Levels may also be changed based upon the reading record.  The reading level will also be used to set your child’s “point goal” for each nine-week grading period.  A child’s point goal is the number of AR points that he/she is expected to accumulate during one nine-week grading period.

There will be four reading grades taken from the Accelerated Reader program each nine weeks. Two grades will be assigned at progress report time (50% of goal and percentage correct) and two grades will be assigned at the end of the nine weeks (100% of goal and percentage correct).  For example, if your child’s point goal is 20 and he or she earns 20 points or more, the percentage would be 100.

*Please keep in mind that the “point goal” is based on individual reading levels and not all students’ goals will be the same.  Also, point goals will be evaluated and changed as needed at the beginning of each nine weeks.
