Honors English FYI

Thursday (Nov. 20):  Write one body paragraph for your research paper, adding citations as you write.  If you recieved a 50 on your first draft, redo it, adding the necessary citations and resubmit it to me before second block if possible.  Get the parent letter signed and return tomorrow for 10 points on a test grade.

Wednesday (Nov. 18)Study for your Romanticism test.  I have posted the study guide on the handouts page.  You should reread the selections, especially the ones you may not have read thoroughly.  You should also make sure you know the meanings of the terms and the important information about each author.  See the handout.  If you did not print your introduction and first body paragraph, print these and turn in to me tomorrow before 2nd block so that I can check them during my planning period and return to you by class time. This literature test is a major test grade, so study to insure that you will be able to do your best.

Tuesday (Nov. 17)Finish typing or writing your introduction and first body paragraph (with citations).  Print and bring to class for me to check.  If you have not turned in your outline to be checked, make sure you do this tonight as well.  Please take the initiative to do further research on your topic if necessary. You should have at least 5-7 note cards per subtopic for your paper.  If you notice a deficiency in this number, read your research material and create some more note cards to fill in the gaps.  Remember, your body paragraphs should be at least 8 sentences long.  See the handouts page if you need the handout I gave out today on writing the thesis, introduction, and first body paragraph.

Monday (Nov. 16)Finish reading "The Pit and the Pendulum" and answer the questions. I will collect these tomorrow. Make sure you have enough note cards to begin writing your first and second body paragraphs tomorrow.  Bring a flash drive to save your work.

Weekend (Nov. 14-15): I hope you have found some time to begin working on your research paper.  I will be returning your note cards tomorrow.  I am missing note cards from as many as ten students in each class.  I hope these students are making every effort to complete this assignment during the weekend.  These note cards will need to be completed by Tuesday, the day we will have the mobile lab in the classroom to use to begin writing the body paragraphs of the research paper.  I will be checking these paragraphs and returning these by Thursday.  You are to finish your research paper during the holidays.  The first draft is due by Wed., Dec. 2.  Also, come to class prepared by having read "The Pit and the Pendulum" and answered the questions on the handout given out last week. Check the website for this handout.

Thursday (Nov. 12):  If you did not finish typing your outline and works cited pages, finish these assignments, print, and turn in for me to check.  Finish your note cards tonight if you did not turn these in today.  After tomorrow, the note cards will be considered late.  Ten points will be deducted for each day these are late.  The note cards and source cards assignment is counted as a writing grade.  If you have not done so, read "The Pit and the Pendulum" by Edgar Allan Poe.  We will work on answering the questions on the handout tomorrow in class.  Voc. Test postponed until Monday.  Pronoun Test is still tomorrow (Fri).

Tuesday (Nov. 10):  Work on your note cards, making sure that you meet the quota and that you have enough information to write a research paper.  Take the time to do a good job on the notetaking stage of the process.  Also, by Friday, you should read "The Pit and the Pendulum," p. 281.  Work on the reading questions as you read.  If you were absent, you can print these from the website.  I forgot to give this handout to fourth block, but if you are in fourth block English, you can print this and complete the assignment.  If you cannot print, get a handout from me on Thursday.  Remember to bring a flash drive to class on Thursday to save your work.

Monday (Nov. 9):  Continue to work on your research for your research paper.  Work on your note cards for each subdivision of your paper.  Print any articles on your flash drive.  Place these in your yellow envelope and bring all of your research supplies to class on Tuesday.  You will have an hour of class time to work on your note cards.  Study your vocabulary words every night this week.  Progress reports will be given out tomorrow.

Weekend (Nov. 7-8):  Print articles that you sent to your email or saved to your flashdrive.  Read and highlight your articles.  Paraphrase information that you have highlighted and write notes on 4x6 note cards.  Follow the subtopics listed on your research handout.  I have posted these on the web in case you have misplaced yours.  Remember, your note cards are due on Nov. 12 (Thursday).  You should be working on these a little every day.  You should have information from two-three different sources for each body paragraph. Print your vocabulary list from the web.  Your test is on Friday of this week.

Thursday night:  Finish the handout on "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment."  The chart, the pre-reading assignment and questions should be completed by tomorrow.  Turn in for a grade.  Also, print your articles for your research paper and work on your note cards. These note cards are due on Nov. 12 (next Thursday).

Wednesday Night:  Finish classwork for today and work on note cards.

Monday Night:  Print your articles you saved to a flash drive today.  Place these articles in your research packet (yellow envelope).  Finish your questions on "The Devil and Tom Walker" and the Romanticism 1/2 sheet handout of questions.  Turn these in tomorrow for a daily grade.  Read "Thanatopsis" by William Cullen Bryant.

Weekend Reminder:  Accordion books (reading project for Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass) are due tomorrow.  Questions for Tom Walker are due on Tuesday.  Print your syllabus and vocabulary list for the week (to be posted by this evening).
