Welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderful and rested Christmas break.
Parents, our goal this second semester is for every student to become a fluent
reader. This means that students can read with ease and instantly recognize
and decode words. To achieve this goal, students will need to read
Accelerated Reader books daily.
STAR Testing – Each student took a computerized reading test before the
Christmas break. The STAR test evaluates the student’s reading level. This
will help students successfully read books on their level and allow them to
improve their reading skills. Your child’s reading level is marked on the
library book that is checked out.
Accelerated Reading (AR) Books – Students will continue to check out library
books on their reading level. How can you help? Have your child read to you
every day! Students will also need to bring their library book to school
every day so that they can read their AR book. You should work with your
child until they can easily read their book. Your child should read their
reading book three times. The first time the child should learn the words.
The second time the child should read for understanding. The third reading
should be for enjoyment. Continue to record the book on your child’s book log
so that they can take an AR test on the book.
A spelling word list and a vocabulary list have been placed in your child’s
notebook. Spend 15- to 20-minutes each day practicing the twelve spelling
words, reading the vocabulary words and high frequency words, and completing
the reading homework activities.
A spelling test will be given on Fridays. One point will be deducted for
letter reversals and capital letters when it is not appropriate. Also, a
vocabulary test will be given each Friday.
