Title I is a federally funded program that was established in 1965. The purpose of this program is to provide students with additional help in reading and mathematics. Our school has qualified as a schoolwide project for funding under this program, and we offer systematic, explicit instruction to those students who are in the greatest need in both reading and math.
As participants in the Alabama Reading Initiative our school has a schoolwide plan for intervention with struggling readers. Students also receive tutorial services in math. Along with your child’s teacher, there are four other certified teachers who work with identified children: Mrs. Edith Smothers and Mrs. Mandy Gann, Reading Resource Teachers, Mrs. Dena McCann, Intervention Teacher, and Mrs. Andretta Albright, Reading Coach.
We are very excited to be able to offer these additional services to our students. Besides working with struggling reading and math students, our schoolwide plan also serves our total school population. Our parental involvement program is vital to the success of all our students. There will be a variety of parent activities throughout the school year to equip parents to help students at home with reading and math activities.
We also have a number of learning materials that are available in our Parent Resource Center that parents may check out for home use. These materials include books, games, videos, computer software, tapes, etc. There are also Make and Take Centers available for constructing at-home learning materials. The Parent Resource Center is located in Room 121 of the New First Grade Building. We invite each of you to come by during a regular school day and check it out. If you can't come by the PRC during the school day, please go to the PRC newsletter page, fill out an order form and the materials will be sent home with your child.
