Homework

Homework will be begin the week of Labor Day!

The following homework is standard for every week. It is extremely rare for me to send home
incomplete work or other assignments to be done as homework. Please note each assignment is
listed beside the day it is to be done. **Assignments are due the NEXT day.**

Monday - Math Monday! Math Bags go home today. Please enjoy the selected game WITH your
child. Games should come complete with everything needed. The purpose is not only to revisit a
math skill but to spend time with your child in an educational but fun setting. The "homework" that
is submitted is a simple form that a parent signs stating the game/activity was done. This form
must be returned to school in the child's homework folder, so it can easily be submitted on Tuesday
morning. (To keep these bags low-maintenance, please note on the form if the bag is lacking any
essential items.) There is a signature sheet kept inside of each game that should be signed and
dated beside your child's name. This ensures your child gets a different game each Monday. This
may sound complicated, but once your child takes a Math Bag home, it will become more clear.
There is a copy of the form on the Letters/Forms page of this site, in case there aren't any in the
bag. PLEASE NOTE: Bags should be returned ready for the next student to take home. (We cannot
spare time looking through bags for homework forms!) It would also be helpful if games are placed
into the bag so the folder name is visible on one side and the signature form is right-side-up on the
other side. Thanks in advance!

Tuesday - LOG CHECK Reading/Dolch/Math. The days/times CAN be spread out over the entire
week, but logs are checked every Wednesday, so check over the logs on Tuesday evening to ensure
they are up to date. Here is the expectation for the logs:
*** Read a minimum of 100 minutes per week (Raz kids counts-IF it is logged on the form).
*** DOLCH sight words (Pre-primer to 3rd grade) a minimum of 15 minutes per week, more as
needed for complete mastery. Please see my Powerpoint slide show, printable labels or the Dolch
list in the Letters/Forms section of this site. All words should be mastered to a four-second recall
(without having to sound out) by the end of first grade. Students will be tested on these words once
each quarter.
*** Addition facts with sums to 18. Study a minimum of 15 minutes per week, more as needed for
complete mastery. (Once addition facts are mastered, move on to subtraction with addends to 18.)
These must be memorized for quick recall before the end of the school year. It is suggested that
they are practiced 1-2x per week using flash cards, a computer program, aplusmath.com or on
paper. HOW they are practiced is up to you, as long as it is documented in the log. There is no
"paper homework" to turn in - the logs will be checked on Wednesdays.

Wednesday - Word Work Wednesday! Do the ONE page assigned to that Wednesday's date and
submit it Thursday. Directions and a sample page are in the Letters/Forms section of this site. Due
dates are each sheet and combined into a packet which will be used for 5 weeks. A parent letter
accompanies each packet. Please DO NOT submit the entire packet at one time nor any pages before
it's due date as they will be returned and not counted.

Thursday- Thinkin' Thursday! Guided Reading practice. Students will take home a book on their
reading level. The bag will also contain a sheet of strategies for you to guide their reading (as
opposed to "giving" any unknown words). An oral reading test (aka "Running Record") with
comprehension questions MAY be given for their assigned book the following day! IT IS IMPERATIVE
THAT ALL BOOKS AND BAGS MUST BE RETURNED FRIDAY as most are used in class every day!! Please
see Letters/Forms section for a letter with Guided Reading homework information.

Friday - No assigned homework. (Log Reading, Dolch/Math in folder anytime, though!)

Other Notes:
If a child is absent, they should send in the missed assignment along with the new assignment the
next day. If absent on a Monday (Math Bag day) the child should do the Hundreds Board activity (see
Letters/Forms section) since they will not receive a bag.

Communication Forms (in the Homework Folder) are to be signed by a parent each night. Behavioral
messages and Bug Awards are marked on this form. Please follow-up by asking your child about any
behaviors that resulted in notes home.
