I was born and raised in Mississippi. My husband and I moved to Arkansas in
1981. I have a Master's degree in Early Childhood from the
University of Mississippi. My husband, Kevin, retired three years ago from
Weyerhaeuser after working for them for 35 years. We have one son,
Steve, who is 26 years old. He has a Master's degree in digital filmmaking
and lives in Brooklyn, New Yok. My husband and I are both active
members of Piney Grove United Methodist Church.
I have taught school for 27 years. In my teaching career I have taught
first, second, and sixth grade. This will be my 19th year to teach
kindergarten. I love teaching kindergarten and young children. I also enjoy
watching Cardinals baseball, RV camping, and reading.
I believe that all children can learn and that all children are gifted in
their own special way. Kindergarten is not just about having a list of skills
that need to be mastered. Kindergarten is also that year to learn how to get
along with others and grow socially and emotionally. It is that first big
step of being in "big school".
This year we will be doing and learning different skills in our classroom. I
will be learning a new curriculum along with the children. We will be doing
Daily 5 in our literacy program. We will also be following the Common Core
standards as our guide for skills in math and literacy each nine weeks. This
is a curriculum followed by 44 states and is being implemented in grades K-2.
I also feel that the most important thing between the teacher and parents is
communication. Working together I know we can help your child to have a
successful and fun first year at school. I consider it a privilege to be
working with your most prized possession, your child.
