Silly Spelling Stories

Each week, as a whole group, our class uses our word study words to create a Silly Spelling Story. This is a lesson on both spelling (with word patterns) and writing. Our first step into this silly journey begins with us discussing our words and deciding what topic would best wrap around those words. I am often surprised, though I should probably not be, just how silly kids can make it. Most of the time the stories are just what they say they are - silly; other times they are related to events that take place around the school - always with a silly twist!

As we begin writing, I let the kids lead the discussion, and I throw in suggestions where they let me. (This is one of their favorite lessons!) If I find that our writing is getting boring I might ask for an adverb, adjective, or strong verb here or there, and we take a class vote on which to use. If our writing becomes long winded and looses sight of the topic, I try to pull it back together. In the end, we decide (often by vote) when it is time to let the silly spelling story come to  (we hope) a graceful conclusion.

We hope you enjoy our Silly Spelling Stories!

Dragonflies in the Outfield

It is a bright sunny day as the breeze blows the fluffy white clouds away,, and we are ready to play some ball! Sunny Scarecrow scuttles up to the plate. Ladies and gentlemen, it is a special day for Sunny. Be sure to say Happy Birthday to, and we would like to say a special hello to his grandparents watching from the stands.

DJ Dragonfly flutters around the ball as he prepares for the pitch. Will it be a fast ball? We can only wait and see! Here goes...it is a fast ball...will Sunny hit it...it's anyone's guess! Let's hope he ate his Wheaties for breakfast...he's going to need it to hit this fireball.

He hit it! Oh my goodness, he hit it! Nobody will find it now; it is somewhere in the great beyond of the outfield. Won't his grandparents be proud.

Dragonfly and Scarecrow players now hover around the hospital bed. David is looking up in confusion. Boy that must have been one hot fireball to leave a know like that. Sunny and DJ look down and whisper, "Are you OK?" Sunny says, "I'm sorry the ball hit you, what were you doing out there?" David, still confused says, "I think I was daydreaming about my Wheaties and REAL scarecrows and dragonflies!"

Super Shrimp: The Wedding

Sassy Lady Lobster was about to explode with happiness! In her sassy way she screeched, "Oh . . . yes!" Now Super Shrimp was the one who could not control his happiness. Together they called for a toast. Raising their sea cumcumber smoothies they did just that!

The lovely wedding was planned for the month of October. A coach of sea horses would be their noble steeds awaiting their arrival. The whole sea gathered in suspense at the graceful Church of Coral that rested on the bottom of the sea. (Reader: Do you have a strong feeling something might go wrong?)

Oh no! Who should appear? Their mortal foes . . . the blood thirsty, wedding crashing sharks snatching our own sassy Lady Lobster and demanding a ransom! Oh what will happen next?

  Super Shrimp

Since the beginning of written time, shrimp have ruled the sea, but the wild, bloodthirsty, sharp- toothed sharks began to take over. One day, a shrimp happened upon some radio-active water and thus was born Super Shrimp! Now, no superhero is complete without their handy, dandy sidekick. In scrambles sassy Lady Lobster with her claws of steel. Together, they make the ultimate shark-slaying duo! Faster than lightning . . . able to flash higher than a cypress tree . . . no . . . a skyscraper. . . this duo has to decide the fate of the world. Yet, even after a long day of shark slaying, Super Shrimp has the energy to take his sassy Lady Lobster on a picnic. It is there, that Super Shrimp surprises his sassy Lady Lobster with a pearl engagement ring. Which will it be . . . yes or no? Check back next week for the dramatic results!

  The Slippery, Slithering Snake

Way back when , when it was "once upon a time" time, our teacher found a slippery, slithering snake in our empty hallway. Legend has it that the slippery, slithering snake was so eager to receive his education that he squeezed his way in. All of the people - and by that we mean the other fourth grade teachers - stood hysterically at the edge of the hallway. They almost jumped our of their sneakers! Mrs. Dunn had to say, for the tenth time, "It's only a baby!"

Then after the heroic rescue from the evil Mrs. Hicks, the slippery, slithering snake was placed in a box. Our assistant principal, Miss Waymack, sassed, "Mrs. Dunn, that box is not going to hold that snake!" But Mrs Dunn believed it would do just fine. However, he made his easy escape as we attentively listened to our favorite teacher, Mrs. Dunn teach spelling. After a dramatic search and rescue, the slippery, slithering snake was sadly set free far, far away from room 506.

 Chunky Monkey
One slippery spring morning a monkey learned how to whistle. Yet, the whistle was but a whisper because the chunky monkey was thirsty. Being the athelete that he was, he quickly scrambled up the prickly pine tree. He attached himself to the toughest, thickest branch he could find; where he stretched to find the easiest spring water to get to. However, to his dismay, the pool was nowhere to be found. His funny monkey friends watched in laughter as he struggled with these problems. They gathered around the prickly pine tree to watch just as the chunky monkey tumbled from above and landed on the peanut butter and banana sandwich that had made him thirsty in the first place!

As always...please check back often...more to come!!!
