3.      Guided Reading Activity:

a)      Objective:

·        Identify the meaning of metaphors based on literary allusions and conceits.

b)      Read the Make the Connection on page 224 and complete the Quick-write.

c)      Read the excerpt from “Self-Reliance” p. 224-225.

d)      Use a two-column chart to record highlight metaphors.  In the second column explain each metaphor in your own words.

e)      Assessment: In your paragraph, write your opinion of Emerson’s version of self-reliance.  Do you agree with him or disagree with him?  What is self-reliance in your mind and how would you describe it to other?

 

Tuesday – District benchmark testing

Objective: to determine students’ on-grade-level skills and knowledge.

Activity:

  1. Students will take the district test on reading in English
  2. Students who miss will receive a zero for the benchmark test unless the district arranges a alternative day of testing.
  3. Results of the test will be reflected in five percent of the overall English 11 grade.

 

Wednesday

1.      DEAR – Students will read AR books for 15 minutes.

2.      DOL – Record Words to Own


a)      Fill in-the-blank sentences


3.      Guided Reading: aphorisms

a)      Objectives:

·        Critique the consistency and clarity of the text’s purposes.

·        Analyze the power, validity, and truthfulness of the arguments advanced in persuasive text

b)      Activity:

·        Answer the Making Meaning questions for “Self-Reliance” on page 228 on the Elements of Literature book.

c)      Assessment: Journal entry: “Trick or Truth” (Choices 2) on page 229 of the text. 

 

Thursday

A       DEAR – students will read AR books for 10 minutes.

B       Guided Reading: excerpt from “Nature”

1.      Objectives:

·        Make relevant inferences by synthesizing concepts and ideas from a single reading selection.

·        Analyze culturally or historically significant literary works of American literature that reflect our major literary periods and traditions.

2.      Test over Emerson’s excerpts from “Nature” and “Self-Reliance”.

a.       Transcendentalism genre questions

b.      Comprehension check on literary selections

c.       Words to Own – 20 words from both stories

C       Assessment: Student performance on test

·        Why is he famous?

    1. Students are to write a response to the Quickwrite in their journals.
    2. Discuss paradox and background.
