Dear Enriched Student:

You are about to enter the new and exciting world of high school
academics. While enriched class may seem daunting, they are designed to
prepare you to exceed on your AIMS scores, build up your skill for other
challenging curriculum, and offer you a different curriculum from the regular
English 9 classes. All enriched students are expected to complete one summer
reading assignment. This year for ninth grade, you are reading To Kill a
Mockingbird. This historical fiction book takes place in the Deep South in
the years just before World War II. The narrator remembers a time in her past
that involved two important lessons.
Complete all of the following work during the summer. All assignments
are due by the first day of class. Be ready to take an AR quiz and a paper
quiz during the first week of class. These assignments will be counted as
part of the class grade; therefore, your summer work reflects your first
semester total grade. Also, these assignments show me what kind of student
you are.

Steps to Follow
I.	Read To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. You can check out a book
through the high school book store.
II.	Complete the two story maps to show your understanding of the plot.
There are two basic plot lines in this story. One involving Boo Radley and
the other one involving Mr. Robinson. So, one story map should focus on the
narrator's interaction with Boo Radley while the other story map should show
the story of Atticus Finch and his client.
III.	Type the book report; follow carefully the perimeters. The purpose of
this book report is to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of both
the novel and common literary elements that have been presented to you in
elementary and middle school. Use a minimum of carefully selected words that
demonstrate your comprehension and capabilities.

I can be contacted by my school e-mail address any time during the
summer. Since it is my summer break, it may take me a few days to respond;
however, if you have any questions about the assignment, please e-mail me. I
will respond to your question as soon as possible. My e-mail is
cmatlosz@ajusd.org and the same information can be found through the high
school’s website or on my website at
http://www.teacherweb.com/AZ/AJHS/CMatlosz/ .
I look forward to meeting you in August. Have a safe and enjoyable
summer.

Sincerely,

Candyce Matlosz
