About Candyce Matlosz

I was born and raised in Montana. I moved to the Southwest to teach middle
school language arts and reading. After teaching for ten years in New Mexico,
my husband and I moved to Mesa, Arizona. We both teach at Apache Junction High
School. Mr. Matlosz is the social studies department chair and head girls
softball coach. We have two cats who keep us company at home.

I am currently teaching Enriched English 9 and regular English 11 classes. My
bachelors degree is a English degree with minors in social studies and
education from Montana State University. I have also earned my Masters of
Education with an emphasis in reading from Grand Canyon University. This year
I will be the Career Ladder and AEA representative for the high school.

Enriched English 9 and American Literature

Whether you are a ninth grade enriched English student or an eleventh grade
American English student, my goal for this class is to improve your English
language, to challenge you to improve your critical thinking skills, and to
broaden your vision of your world.

Enriched English 9 is an advanced, academic class. The curriculum objective
strands follow the same sequence as the English 9 classes; however, the
materials and/or the work assigned is at ninth grade level. Units of study
begin with a short research introduction before moving into short stories.
Second quarter student primarily study persuasive texts and writing although,
if time allows, we'll read Lord of the Flies. Third quarter all English 9
classes study elements of figurative language through poetry and Romeo and
Juliet. Fourth quarter is a non-fiction unit on Vietnam and the 1960s.
Students will be expected to spend time outside of class working on literature
samples, assignments, and projects. Students are expected to work with 36
vocabulary words weekly, learning to identify words from their Latin and Greek
roots. Basic grammar and convention rules are reviewed in class as well.

English 11 is a American literature survey class that follows the development
of literature in the United States as we grew as a nation. We begin with the
earliest European authors in the first quarter and move chronologically
through various genres of American literature. This class is geared toward
developing adult thinkers rather than on reading and writing skills. Students
will be expected to complete reading and writing assignments, projects, and
tests. Much of the individual work will take place outside of class. In class
the students will work in a variety of learning methods from individual
demonstrations of learning to partner and group work. All final demonstrations
of comprehension are individual.

I am always willing to help anyone who asks. If you do not understand
something or need a special request, please feel welcome to approach me on the
side to gain my assistance. With large class sizes, the best time to get help
is to schedule an after school tutoring session.
