SUMMER PROGRAMS

FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

The Scottsdale Culinary Institute is offering 2 summer

camps for juniors and seniors.

A Culinary Camp and a Pastry and Baking Camp – both will be held in June. The cost is $235 dollars each or $450 for both.

Midwestern University’s annual Health Careers Institute for High School Students will take place this year from July 9 through July 18 on the University’s campus in Glendale. This FREE enrichment program is open to all current high school students (must be 16 by July 9 to apply), and offers HANDS-ON lab activities and workshops designed to introduce students to a variety of exciting health professions.

Students who show an aptitude for science, are thinking of a career in health/medicine, and could benefit from university resources and interactive, small group learning should apply. Applications from under-represented, low-income, or first-generation college-bound students are especially encouraged.

The deadline for application to the Institute is May 1st, and all applicants are required to submit a recommendation letter from a science teacher.

2 Day Seminar at MCC

Fundamentals of System Design,

Implementation and Optimization

 

This seminar encompasses a variety of topics in sound system applications.  Practical information on system design and application is presented in a real-world context to provide useful background.  Theory and practice of line arrays are discussed along with the tools for system optimization, including equalization, delay, loudspeaker management systems and measurement with the SIM 3 audio analyzer.

 

The seminar’s second day is dedicated to use of Meyer Sound MAPP Online – acoustical prediction software as a primary tool in system design.  After an extensive introduction to the program and its capabilities, attendees are walked through exercises in which they specify venues and design loudspeaker systems to cover them.

 

Finally, the seminar will discuss and demonstrate important concepts pertaining to the use of subwoofers and methods of deployment that obtain optimal coverage and directivity characteristics.

Youth Governance Camp 2009

Come join the Native American Youth Governance Camp, June 23-25, 2009, on the campus of The University of Arizona in Tucson.

NAYGC is designed for high school juniors, seniors, and 2009 high school graduates. During the three-day camp, students will reside on campus, eat in the Student Union Memorial Center, and attend classes on the UA campus.

NAYGC is designed to build the knowledge and skills of the future leaders of Native nations through a comprehensive curriculum which explores the fundamental keys to effective

Indigenous self-governance. Students will engage in critical thinking and decision-making exercises that address Indigenous Country’s most pressing challenges, and team- and consensus-building assignments designed to promote the wisdom and benefits of cooperation as a pathway toward a brighter collective future.

Youth Entrepreneur Camp 2009

Come join the thirteenth Native American Youth Entrepreneur Camp, July 19 – 24, 2009, on the campus of The University of Arizona in Tucson.

Learn to build private-sector enterprises in Indian Country. Visit Indian-owned businesses and meet the owners. Enjoy extra-curricular activities on and off the UA campus.

During the six-day camp, students will reside on campus, eat in the Student Union Memorial Center, and attend

HIGH SCHOOLERS LEARN MULTIMEDIA SKILLS AT

UA JOURNALISM WORKSHOP

The University of Arizona School of Journalism is accepting applications for its Journalism Diversity Workshop for Arizona High School Students. The workshop runs June 6-17 and gives students from diverse populations a chance to learn news gathering, editing and other aspects of the journalism profession.

Interested students should submit an application accompanied by a recent photograph, short essay and a letter of recommendation from a teacher, adviser, administrator or mentor. The recommendation letter may also be submitted via email. A copy of the application form is on the UA Journalism website. Applications and recommendations must be postmarked on or before May 1, 2009 and sent to:

This Book Award, which has been presented in high schools since 1991, is an inscribed copy of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, along with a $1,000 renewable scholarship to Chatham University if the student enrolls as a full-time undergraduate.

PACE UNIVERSITY

2009 Summer Scholars Institute

Now in its eleventh year, Summer Scholars is a groundbreaking, two weeks program designed for exceptional and highly motivated high school students eager to experience the atmosphere of college with interesting and challenged courses that are part of the University curriculum.

The 2009 Program will run July 19th – August 1st on their New York City campus – nestled between City Hall Park and South Street Seaport in Lower Manhattan. They are offering 10 majors to choose from. Each major has two courses which students take as part of the curriculum. In the evening, all of the Summer Scholars students come together for cultural activities and lectures on college life.

Upon completion of the program, students receive a Certificate of

Course Completion.

In addition, Dr. Christopher Malone, Director, Summer Scholars Program, will write a letter of recommendation for them for ANY college they apply to – provided that they promise to apply to Pace University as well and ALL Summer Scholars get consideration for entry into the Pforzheimer Honors College at Pace University, which automatically comes with a $15,000 annual merit scholarship and a free laptop.

Robotics Camp

ASU’s Robotics Camp is a summer program series designed for middle and high school students who intend to pursue a science and engineering career. Prior experience in programming or robotics is not required. The camp is sponsored by the US Department of Education, Intel and the School of Computing and Informatics at Arizona State University. The robots built by students will enter a robotics competition and demonstration.

The camp will be taught by Dr. Yinong Chen and his teaching assistants. Dr. Chen is a computing and robotics expert, who led ASU teams to win champion titles in the “Ultimate Architecture Sumo-Robot Competition” in Las Vegas in 2005 and 2006.

Summer Opportunities for Students

GateWay Community College is pleased to present their DISCOVER Summer series for youth. The youngest students can take part in Camp Gecko and Drama Camp, fully supervised in their licensed Children’s Learning Center. Seventh and eighth grade students can spend two weeks studying biotechnology. In their DISCOVER Careers academies, high school students earn college credit while they explore careers.
