NAME: Mrs. Kent

SCHOOL PHONE: 480.982.1110 ext. 5274

About The Teacher

It's great to be beginning my second year as the Transitional Skills teacher
at AJHS!

This year marks my 21st year as a teacher. Most of my experience has been at
the community college and high school level in Business and Management.
However, I've worked with students from kindergarten through university
master's level.

I earned both my bachelor's and master's degrees from Oregon State
University, and am an avid Beavers fan. Did you notice OSU baseball won
their second national title this summer? I'll be the one in orange and black
at Sun Devils stadium on September 22. GO BEAVS!

In addition to being a highly qualified Arizona teacher, I'm also a National
Board Certified Teacher (Adolescent and Young Adult Professional Technical
Education), and still hold a current Business and Management vocational
certificate in Oregon. I've been accepted into a doctoral program at NAU,
and look forward to the challenges that will entail.

My husband and I moved to Arizona five years ago, and love living in the
desert. Traveling, hiking, and exploring take up most of our spare time. We
have grown children in Arizona, Oregon, Washington, and Illinois, and have a
son serving in the Army in Afghanistan.

Mission For The Class

In this school-to-career course, students will examine the necessary skills
for entering the world of work, including problem-solving, time management,
money management, working relationships, and organizational skills. Students
will learn and practice self-determination and self-advocacy skills through
researching identified learning disabilities, becoming aware of court cases
and laws granting specific rights, and deciding which accommodations and
modifications will allow them to be successful academically. Each student
will lead his or her own IEP process. Students will explore a variety of
occupational choices based on individual aptitudes, likes, dislikes, and
dreams. Students will prepare resumes and cover letters and learn
interviewing skills. Most people spend more than a third of a lifetime in a
diverse and constantly changing workplace. This course will prepare students
with realistic employment goals and a plan to enter career-related training
or the workforce upon high school graduation.
