How do the layers work for the assignments grade?

All students may choose how many points they wish to earn on each chapter.
"C" layered assignments have the value on each on the sign-off sheet. If the
students choose to do most of the "c" layered in class they will get a C on
the chapter for their assignment grade. To make a B, they must choose one "B"
layered activity in
addition. To make an A, you must pick also one "A" level activity in
addition. Think of it as buying a car. Do you want just the car or do
you want the car with wheels and air? Or do you want the car, wheels, air and
the total package...Real life skills here.

Ok, my son or daughter does the layers and gets an A on it. A for chapter?

The layers are only on the assignment grade which is 25% of the total grade.
Now the student has to study and pass the quiz and the Chapter test. The quiz
is 10% of the grade and the tests are 30% of the grade so the test is the most
important. Think of it as a mutual fund. What are my strengths and what are
my weaknesses?

Ok, what about these labs every other Thursday?

Labs are the hands on assignments we do. They are weighted at 15% of the
grade so yes they are very important. Let's just say that if your son or
daughter decides not to do the lab, it is like taking a 0 on 1/2 a test. Labs
are due the following Tuesday. We use www.classzone.com and PLATO for our labs.

This sign-off sheet , I do not understand it.

The sign-off sheet has all the individualized assignments that will be taught
during the chapter with point values. Also on it are the "B" and "A" level
choices for the students. When the chapter is done, the student turns in
their sheet and I total up their point totals of what they did, think of it
like a a check off sheet of duties you need to do to get paid and how much
each is worth.

What is the best way to pass the class? I have had trouble with it.

Take the notes for the "C" layered in class and study them. I give most of
the answers to the test in the notes. Don't loose your sign-off sheet and
find a "B" and "A" level activity you are interested in and do it. Do not
forget to turn in your labs. Use your home computer or the schools to get it
done. If you just do these things you will pass. People that have trouble
are those with attendance issues who do not do the make up work or those who
do not turn in their sign-off sheets.

My son or daughter does not like to read. Will there be reading?

Yes, Yes and Yes. We are a reading in the content area class and the AIMS
will test students on reading comprehension. The good news is I review most
of what is read in the books.

Can I get the homework for my son or daughter if they are gone?

Yes, they may always work on their "B" or "A" level activity at home. Also,
most of the handouts can be down loaded right off this site.

How can I know my grade in this class.

Progress reports go out every four weeks for all of our students. Also, any
parent may request a up-dated grade at any time. The best time to get the
grade is when we are done testing out of a chapter as it will be the most
accurate. Email works the best for me. I post the grades by ID number on my
wall after tests.

Why do they have to use responders to take the test?

The responders are a great way to use technology in the classroom. The student
will know their grade within 5 min. when everyone is done testing. It also
gives back feedback as to which concepts and questions the student is doing
well on and what they need more work on. As a class we use the data to see
what we know and what we had trouble on during the test. This is how I set
the lessons and why I give a pre-test for each chapter. Think of it as a
weight training class and our class can all lift 100 lbs. I will not start
them at 50 lbs but where they tested at.
