Earth Materials Project

Habitat Adventure Project

DUE Tuesday , Nov. 15th 2011

We have begun our studies on habitats and ecosystems.  This is a family project that should be completed together but the ideas and information need to be produced by the student. You will find all of the requirements for this project below.

The project will be a large part of 2nd Quarter’s Writing and Science scores.  Please let your teacher know if you have any questions.  The project will be worth a total of 100 points.  The written report will be worth 40 points, the visual part will be worth 30 points, and the oral presentation will be worth 30 points.

The habitats to pick from include Desert, Rain Forest, Wetlands (fresh water), Prairie (Grasslands), Arctic Tundra, Ocean, Caves, Ponds, and Deciduous Forest.  You and your student will learn as much as possible about ONE of these habitats and the life within it.  You can use our school library, any public library, and the Internet.  We have been learning about these habitats in class and students may bring home information from the internet research, textbook research, or from mini books or worksheets.

Part 1:  The Written Report

Below you will find all of the info that needs to be included in your written research report.  There are 40 points total for written report.  Each individual section should be 1-2 complete paragraphs.  The total written report should be no longer then 3 pages double spaced.  It can be typed on computer or hand written, it must be VERY NEAT and organized.  Points will be taken off for messy handwriting.

Habitat (20 points)

One or two paragraphs

1.   Define and describe your habitat. (Where is it located on Earth? Any hazards or dangers to the area?)

2.  List at least 5 characteristics of your habitat.

    (climate, earth, plants, population, etc)

3.   Tell about at least one interesting fact most people may not know about your habitat

Animals in your Habitat (10 points)

One or two paragraphs

1.    Pick at least 3 animals that live in your habitat.

2.    <꥔ຠ>Explain all about your animals and how they have adapted to your habitat.

Plants in your Habitat (10 points)

One or two paragraphs

1.    What plants live in your habitat?  List several of these plants (3 to 5). Describe the plants in your habitat.

2.    How have the plants adapted to life in your habitat?

Cite your sources

List the internet websites you used while researching.

List all book titles you used while researching.

Part 2:  Visual Part of Project

Create your Habitat, 30 points (possible extra credit points if outstanding). Your habitat has many unique and interesting features.  Pick one of the following to create a visual representation of your exciting habitat; this will be used during your oral presentations and will be displayed for other classes and grade levels.

Choose at least one

1.    Diorama of your habitat

2.    Collage of pictures of your habitat.

3.    Scene or drawing on oaktag or any thick paper illustrating life in your habitat (needs to be very detailed and very neatly drawn)

Part 3:  Oral Presentation

Each student will be presenting their project orally in front of the class the morning/afternoon of the due date. This portion is worth 30 total points.

Students will need to tell the class all about their Habitat (including the plants and animals that live there).  They may NOT read directly from their written report, instead they should plan to read from prepared note cards, or just summarize from memory. Power Point presentations can be used during the oral presentation but are not part of the visual part of the project. Students will be asked questions from the class and the teacher to see how much they have learned from this project!

The overall objectives for this project is for the students pick a habitat they are interested in, learn how to research, create a report, present their ideas and of course HAVE FUN!!!

There is plenty of time to complete this research project (over 5 weeks). Please help your student organize their time and research. Please do NOT turn in the project early, as we do not have the space this year to store projects. Please take time to discuss ideas on what habitat your student might want to research (what are they interested in, animals, plants, oceans, snow, etc). Students will need to choose their habitat by October 7th.

Please contact your student’s teacher with questions or concerns.

Thank you!
