What is Books Ahoy?

It is a reading incentive program that HOOKS kids!

How does it work?

Each time a student finishes 100 pages of reading they fill out a little
square piece of paper called a First Mate Reading Log. A parent or guardian
must sign this paper. Once the First Mate Reading Log is filled out and
signed the student is interviewed on the book(s). Then they set sail for a
new continent on our map! The map is marked with each students' sail boat.

What happens once they have sailed to all 7 continents?

After students have read 700 pages they have sailed to each of the 7
continents. Their rank is increased from Mate to First Mate (1,400 pages).
They receive an award and set sail all over again. Once they read 2,100
pages total their rank increases to Second Mate. They receive an award and
set sail again! They then move to Navigator (2,800 pages), Co-Captain
(3,500 pages), and finally Captain (4,200 pages)!

What if a book is just shy of 100 pages?

Until the end of October kids are allowed to read smaller books. They will
wait until they reach 100 pages total to fill out a First Mate Reading Log.
Their interview will be on all the books that made up this 100 page reading.

What happens after October?

Students have been informed that they will have to pick books closer to if
not over 100 pages.

What if the book is over 100 pages?

Some of these kiddos are reading big books! Some of them are a few 100
pages each. They will not fill out a First Mate Reading Log for each 100
pages read. They will wait until the book is complete, the Frist Mate
Reading Log is filled out and signed, and then interview on the entire book.
