Now that we have entered the second half of the school year, homework is going to be changing slightly. I have begun sending home "Books in the Bag." Your child will be receiving a ziploc bag of 2-3 books on his/her reading level weekly. The expectation is that your child reads each book at least once each night. The books should be returned to school on Fridays, and on Friday, your child will select 1-2 books to read to me. The purpose of sending home these books is not only to keep your child reading on a daily basis, but also to practice reading fluently. Reading fluently means the child should sound like he/she is talking while reading, not reading word for word at a labored pace. It is very evident on Fridays when students come in having read the books at home, because the fluent reading is almost always present. In addition to the books in the bag homework, your child will be receiving a literacy related (writing, phonemic awareness, phonics, etc) or a math homework assignment almost daily. I want to be sure everyone is prepared for 1st grade, and I know all 1st grade teachers assign weekly homework! Thank you for your support in working with your child at home. Please contact me with any homework questions.
