Ways to help at home/extensions:

Reading: Fluency. Reading everyday is the most beneficial way to improve your child's reading skills. By the end of the year, your child should be able to read at least 90 words per minute.

Functional Text- Functional text is all around us. Menus, brochures, newspapers, signs, recipes, maps, charts, schedules....are all types of functional text. Grab a piece of functional text and ask your child questions. When you're in a restaurant, have your child choose a menu item, tell you the price and what is included. You can also grab a newspaper and have your child find certain sections, or ask them questions like... "If I wanted to see how the Coyote's did last night, what section would I need to look in?" You could also have them read a recipe to you while making dinner!

Math- Basic fact fluency. Whenever you have that extra 5 minutes, either in the car or before dinner, quiz your child on their basic facts. (Addition and subtraction to 20) Examples: 5 + 6, 10 + 10, 15 - 3, etc... These facts should be memorized. Also, the kids have been learning the traditional way to solve math problems (with borrowing and carrying) any extra help at home with these types  of problems would greatly benefit your child!

Book bag reminder: I have taught the students how to select "just right" books that are appropriate to their reading level. On most nights for the rest of the year, your child will be choosing their own books based on level and interest. Your child should not be taking the same book home for more than 2 nights UNLESS it is a chapter book. Please send a note, call or email if there is a problem with the books your child is selecting so that I can help them choose an appropriate book.
