Homework
In our classroom, students will learn to self-select text. Within the first
few weeks of school we will be launching our reading workshop program, and
students will begin to fill their individual book boxes with lots of great
literature. After the students have learned to self-select text, they will be
bringing home his/her book bag which will be their nightly homework. The
books coming home with your child are at your child’s independent
level-meaning he/she should be able to read it with ease. Please listen to
your child read his/her book in the bag. The goal is for your child to read
15-20 minutes to an adult each evening. Book bags need to come back to school
each day. The signed slip indicates that your child completed their reading
assignment. Thank you in advance for taking the time to initial this
little note each evening. Students are responsible for bringing their book
bag and signed slip back to school each day.
When our guided reading groups begin, they will be bringing home a book I have
selected. During this small group instruction time I use books that I have
selected to teach a specific skill/concept. This book is then brought home,
and your child is asked to read further or reread to increase fluency. The
book that I select for your child should be at your child’s instructional
level. This book might seem more challenging than a “just right” book.
Still, it shouldn’t be so difficult that your child has to struggle.
At Back to School Night I will provide information as how you can be your
child’s reading partner at home. There will be many ideas inside the
informational packet that should be helpful as you listen to your child read
each evening. Refer to the questions/prompts handout if you are not sure what
kind of questions to ask your child or how to prompt him/her when they are
struggling. Please contact me if you have additional questions about the
nightly reading expectations.
Starting the month of September you will find his/her monthly homework menu
inside your child’s daily folder. The menu along with all the work from each
of the choices is due on the last day of September. Your child should
complete at least 10 of the menu choices. Please sign your initials in the
box once a choice is completed. There is no limit as to how many choices may
be completed. Encourage your child to push themselves and do as many choices
as possible. Your child may need some help reading the directions for each of
the choices, but he/she should be able to complete each task independently.
Each menu choice is a review of a skill, game, or concept that we have learned
in class. This results in a homework task that truly allows your child to
apply their knowledge in an open ended and creative way. Your feedback
regarding our homework system is helpful and welcomed, so please let me know
how things are going since your child will be receiving a new homework menu
each month. I think you and your child will find this homework menu
challenging and rewarding.
