I am originally from Oshkosh, Wisconsin where I was a 3rd generation
Oshkoshian. I attended Dale School (built in 1875 and now an apartment
building), Webster Stanley Middle School and Oshkosh North High School (my
high school years were dominated by my love for photography and involvement in
the Newspaper/Yearbook). After five years and many wonderful memories, I
graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh in 1993 with a Bachelor
of Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in Painting/Drawing.
Following graduation, I was employed at Image Pros of Wisconsin (a retail
photo finishing business) for one year. I was fortunate to become a Prepress
technician at Quality Printing Company, Inc. in Neenah, Wisconsin for the next
5 years, as the prepress area evolved from manual layout to a Macintosh
environment. During this time I realized that I needed to pursue my dream of
becoming an art teacher. Thus, I re-enrolled at the University of Wisconsin -
Oshkosh in the Education Department and began work as an IT intern (Support
Desk/Computer Operations) at the Oshkosh Truck Corporation until my
certification in Art Education in 2002 (I also obtained my accordion during
this time).
In August of 2002, I was hired by the Dodgeland School District of Juneau, WI
and enjoyed a wonderful first year of teaching middle/high school art until
the necessary budget cuts forced the elimination of the high school courses
that I taught. With a desire to move away from the Land of Cheese, I accepted
a position with the Glendale Elementary School District as a traveling art
teacher in a place that I had never seen. Thus, in July 2003, I loaded up the
car and headed west to work and live in Glendale until June, 2006.
As of February, 2006, my wife and I reside within the Madison School District
and are happy to call North Central Phoenix our home (she was born and raised
in Phoenix and works at John C Lincoln hospital as a nurse). This brings the
story up to my current position in the art room of Madison Meadows Middle
School where I have been fortunate to be able to meet and work with so many
wonderful students, parents and faculty. As this year progresses, I will be
working on my National Board Certification in Adolescent Art and hoping to
make the art room a place where creativity thrives.
I am hoping that my students will be able to expand their knowledge of art
history while increasing their ability to judge their own artwork and the
artwork of others. I believe that each student is able to produce good
artwork by putting forth effort and continuing to improve.
