Kindergarten Program 2013/2014
Sierra Oaks School offers Kindergarten for
children who turn five, primarily, by September 1st. Kindergarten is held within the K-2 combined classroom
from 8am-12:10pm Monday-Thursday. Since
Sierra Oaks School holds a philosophy of educating within small combined classroom
sizes (ratio 12-1), this is an ideal opportunity for children to develop skills
at the rate that is relative to their capabilities. The program enables for accommodation of varying ranges in rate, timing and learning development that exists in young
children. A daily opportunity for students to engage one-on-one with professional staff is provided in the program as well as recess and snack time.
Language and Literacy Development Students will experience the love of reading
while they learn the foundation strategies and skills that will enable them to
read independently. Kindergartners use the Spalding Reading to Writing and the
Common Core State Standards to develop phonetic awareness, letter names,
sound-letter correspondences, decoding skills, high frequency vocabulary, and
comprehension skills to listen and respond to a variety of texts. They enjoy listening to stories, relating characters and events to their own life experiences, dramatizing stories, and responding to stories through art, music and writing activities.
Math: The Math
Common Core Content Standards along with Everyday Mathematics and hands-on
manipulatives make up the math curriculum.
Students use numbers and written numerals to solve quantitative
problems. They choose, combine and apply
strategies. They describe their world
using geometric ideas and vocabulary.
Science/Social Studies: The K-2 Classroom engages all students in Science and Social
Studies activities as well as Physical Movement and the Arts.
