5th and 6th Grade Writing

5th and 6th graders are responsible for one writing assignment each week, beginning the week of 
September 28th.  Please follow the topics listed below.  5th and 6th graders MUST write in cursive for 
the final copy.  Here is the structure for the week:

Mondays - brainstorming paper
Tuesdays - write rough draft (in pencil, skip lines, 5 sentences for each paragraph)
Wednesdays - edit rough draft 
Thursdays - write final copy (in ink, single spaced)
Fridays - Turn in: (1) final copy, (2) brainstorming paper, and (3) edited rough draft.

Week of September 28th
Think of a famous person that you would like to meet.  Write one paragraph that explains why you 
picked this person.  Write a second paragraph including questions you would like to ask this person.

Week of October 5th
Describe your house.  Draw a floor plan of your house first, and then describe it in detail. 

Week of October 19th 
Pick a small object in your house.  Put it in front of you and describe it.  Look carefully at it.  
Describe its size, color, shape, and weight.  What is it made of and what does it do?  Describe the 
inside, if you can.  Does it have any identifying marks, like a scratch, a label or a dent?

Week of October 26th
Describe yourself.  This is your chance to look at yourself, externally and internally.  What are your 
most  important characteristics?

Week of November 2nd
Pick an item in your house.  List all the parts.  For example: a pencil has an eraser, a metal ring, wood 
and lead.  Choose a larger item with many parts.  You may also draw a picture of the item and label 
its parts to help you.

Week of November 9th
Choose one of the following to describe: a car, a truck or a train.  Describe it in detail.

Week of November 16th
Pic a new name for yourself.  Write about your new name.  What do you like about your new name, 
and why did you choose it?  Write a quick poem about your new name.  For example: JANE - Jolly, 
Awesome, Nice, Elegant

Week of November 30th
The teacher is going to be absent for a week.  Who would you like to have as your substitute teacher: 
an actor, an athlete, or a musician?  Write a paragraph about why you have chosen this person.  Make 
a list of questions you would ask your substitute.  End your paper with a second and third choice if 
your substitute is absent.

Week of December 7th
Describe life without automobiles.

Week of December 14th
Plan a wonderful weekend for you to have with someone special.  First name the person with whom 
you want to spend the weekend.  Then describe each day.  Where will you go, how did you get there, 
and what will you do?  Where will you eat, and what will you buy?  Remember you will only be gone 
for one weekend.
