Summer is here!
Hard to believe the end of the year is upon us. We all enjoyed celebrating the children moving up to first grade as well as those moving up to their Kindergarten Year with a special ceremony. I especially loved how excited the children were to "do it again" for those that were absent on that special day. Generous beings they are. Everyone seemed to have a great time at Water Day! So many fun things to do. Many children braved the water slides, and a few found the mud, some were just thrilled to have the swings all to themselves. The butterflies were even released into the garden at the end of the day. Harley (Reagan's Dad) made a beautiful DVD that was sent home on Wednesday. I took lots of pictures and will load them onto Shutterfly this evening. Please consider putting your pictures and videos on from the Moving Up Ceremony.
Thank you for everything. Maren and Alicia and I were really so moved by the kind words, cards and generous gifts that were shared with us, really very touching, thank you.
FOR THE SUMMER: update regarding the CHICKENS and the heat.
Keep the big water bottles coming! When the heat gets over 115, consider a portable personal mister to cool off the area (one that hooks up to a hose). I'm assured by everyone that I talk to that 99% of the time the chickens are just fine. I'm sure with all living things, there exists the possibility of losing a chicken. But I am assured by all in the know, that we are doing all the right things. If you have any concerns, please let Alicia know, or call or email me and I will post the question on the Phoenix Permaculture Guild Site, they are very helpful and knowledgeable.
The Briggs family has offered to care for the chickens over the summer, and there have been some others that have offered to help in case there is a need. We need a couple of parents over the summer to donate chicken laying feed and pine shavings, the Briggs have been very generous and I'm sure it would be great to have others contribute. Best purchased in a "block" at a FEED STORE, like Ranchmen's, or Pet Depot. Maren is passing on information to Alicia so she will be up on what's needed as well. So it appears that all is well in the coop. I will leave the other Nesting box there and see about finishing up the roosting bar. Please don't worry that the big fat buff brahmas can't get into the nesting box, I found two of them in there together the other day! They are just fine. They love any kind of juicy veggies or fruits so feel free to send in treats for them. The hens have been such a wonderful addition to the classroom, they really have become part of the family.
FOR THE FALL START OF SCHOOL: Just a heads up; Brittany will be needing a classroom parent, as Joseph's mom Chanda moves along with him to first grade. You can email her at bnelson@villamontessori.com if you would like to help with that.
ABOUT PICTURES: I heard that you can not download higher resolution pictures from Shutterfly, if you need some of the pics you see there I have them still saved on my computer. Please feel free to let me know and we can figure out a way to get them to you.
HOPE TO SEE YOU SOON!: This has been a beautiful journey for me personally and though it has been so special to work with all of your children, I have truly enjoyed being part of this beautiful community of parents as well, and have had the good fortune of working for two of most amazing, hard working, dedicated and inspiring women Margo O'neill and Mary Orlando. Lucky I have been. Not to mention the working alongside devoted staff like Maren, Alicia and Cinda, who are committed to seeing each child as an individual with great gifts, and unique needs to whom they offered their steady and loving guidance. Villa is truly a home away from home for me. I hope you will know that I always enjoy hearing about your children, so please know you have open bragging rights with me. I can be reached at laragene2@gmail. com. You can find updates on my journey with Dylan at my website: Project4Peace. I will be posting lots of interesting bits about parenting, ipad apps, science projects, gardening, homeschooling etc. A new adventure awaits.
Have a terrific summer read, play, cook, create, experiment, have FUN, be in the moment, they grow up so fast! Each one of your children is truly amazing! So unique and special. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of their journey.
Love Always,
Laragene
The Auction was such a nice event! It was wonderful to see parents and appreciated all of the very thoughtful and encouraging words. I will miss working with your children more than I can say, but look forward to making some positive changes in my Dylan's life and I thank you for your understanding. We have already been homeschooling for the last 3 weeks and it feels like it is the right thing for him. Your children will remain in my heart and I hope you will keep me posted on their successes and call me if you need a little support. I feel confident that the children will welcome Brittany and she will continue to guide them toward independence, and nurture their love of learning and service. I know you will welcome her with the warmth that you have always shown me.
- Remember there will be a MUNCH and MINGLE to meet Brittany on Wednesday from 6-7pm. Your children are welcome.
- Thank you to Reagan's family who bought the table and chairs. It was adorned with the children's whimsical drawings of insects of all kinds. Thanks go to all of our families for your many contributions to the basket or to the auction itself.
Our Butterflies have emerged and remind us of the song we sing in the classroom: "Change Change Change is coming, don't be afraid when it is time to change". We have all taken this song to heart in some way. We will be releasing them over the garden soon, perhaps during the Moving Up Ceremony, if we can wait that long.
- The children counted up $128.00 in change that was sent to Heiffer International. We purchased a goat and some chicks for a family somewhere in need on our planet. The children beamed with pride at their work collecting and counting and figuring out what we had and what we could purchase with the funds. We have so much to be grateful for.
- I have rearranged the Links to the left so you have quick access to what will be happening during the last days of school and what volunteers and donations are needed. There is also a link to Summer Activities. If you know of anything else to add, please email me.
Currently we need a few more Volunteers for Game Day and the Moving Up Ceremony. We need one more volunteer for Water Day.
- If you haven't noticed, the chicken run is beautiful. Thank you to the George family for the restoration. The Briggs have offered to care for the chickens over the Summer. I wonder if they might enjoy some help, and if there might be some families that would donate chicken feed and pine shavings.
- See you at conferences on Saturday in our classroom and on Monday afternoon. I look forward to this time to talk about your wonderful little ones and share their accomplishments. Please be sure to schedule a time.
Thank you for your patience with Conference times.
The new schedule is now available. One day is Saturday May 19th, and the other is the afternoon of Monday, May 21st. If you can not find a time that works for you, please let me know and we will schedule another time.
- Thank you to Darren George, our chickens will be running "wild" pretty soon. We still need some coop renovations to add a door and fix up the nesting box. Apparently it doesn't appeal to all the ladies. Keep sending those water bottles to recycle. We will keep a steady supply frozen to use to cool those chicken legs in the heat.
- If anyone has terra cotta saucers (large) that they would like to donate, they would be used for hen pools to wade in and stay cool. We will be setting up a schedule for Summer School for the chickens, if you are attending the summer program and can help out please email me. It means free eggs, and fun for your children.
- In the classroom the butterflies have spun their chrysalis, and transformation is currently taking place. We have been singing the butterfly song with Clare.
I hope everyone will consider attending the Auction, it is always a fun night, with lots of pictures of the children and time to visit with each other, not to mention find good deals and support the school. We will have a charming table and 2 chairs for auction with the children's drawings transfered onto the table top. Insects was the theme voted on by the children. So the table will reflect the importance of insects to our environment.
April 17th, 2012
The Conference Schedule is up, please sign up for one of the two days May 4th or May 7th.
Please remember to send a sweater with your child if they might get cold outside in our shady outdoor patio.
Please remember to think about adding to our Auction Basket! Our Theme is Water Fun. It should be a fun basket to fill! I hope all of our class families will consider coming to the Auction this year, it is a very nice event, and an opportunity to celebrate, and support your school.
Enjoy the beautiful Spring weather and get out into Nature with your children. Usery park has miles of trails and the flowers are probably blooming.
March 30th, 2012
Exciting news! The chickens have laid their first eggs. We have 5 so far. It looks like the Barnhams lay white eggs and the Leghorns brown ones. We feel certain that there is not a Rooster in the cage and that they are all hens now. Pretty soon we will have a little more room for the chickens to roam. Our chicken coop group will be building a run. If there is anyone that would like to help, contact Carrie Jankowski (leave a note in the sign out book) or email her. We need hardware cloth and wood to build the frame, and a little hardware to build the door. If you have any of these at your fingertips, please let Carrie know. I am so grateful to the Jankowski family and Briggs family for caring for the chickens on the weekends and days that we are off. We passed the first egg around the line very ceremoniously....not one crack. So sweet. We have named the chickens, and look forward to including some pictures soon with their child given names.
The garden has been very productive as well. Lots of lettuce, celery, and carrots. The tomatoes are blooming and so are the strawberries. The peas are nearly done. We could always use help harvesting during school time if anyone has time.
The snack calendar has been sent home, and I will include a page here on our website. I have sent home a highlighted version so that you know when your week is.
Please look for the slip of paper to come home notifying you that your child's sharing day is the coming Friday. Please be sure to just send sharing on your child's day. No other toys, or other items should come to school on other days. Please avoid sending jewelry on your children, as it can easily become lost on the playground and nearly impossible to find. If your child has a special share that can not wait for sharing, please let me know ahead of time with an email. So we can make time to share it with the class.
The weather has been so beautiful and we are all enjoying the Spring days. It can still be chilly in the garden, so please still send a sweater or sweatshirt so your children are comfortable at lunch and work time outside.
After school snack is not provided to the children by the school. If your child stays for any after school time they are required to bring a snack to school everyday, including Friday. Please place this snack in a separate bag in their lunch box labeled snack. So that you will know what your child is eating each day, we will no longer be providing snack from the cabinet. Jack or Layla will give you a call if your child does not have snack so one can be provided to them. Thank you so much for your help with this.
Hope all of you are enjoying the beautiful weather too. Usery Park isn't very far and is a terrific place to go on the weekend to see the cactus blooming or participate in a Ranger led discussion for children. Enjoy!
February 13th, 2012 Thank you for filling in some of the empty spots on the Ceramics page. We have a couple more to go.
Please label your child's lunch box CLEARLY so we can identify it easily. A Sharpie or paint pen works well.
We have 3 volunteers for Valentines day, and could use 2 more.
I would really love a volunteer to help count change with the children for Heifer International
There have still been no volunteers for dusting. This is a much needed task. Plan on 30 to 45 minutes once a week. It can be in the morning before school starts (7-8:30) or in the afternoon, afterschool, at lunch.
Remember put snack in your child's lunch box if they stay after 2:30. If you have been receiving notes home from us regarding snack be sure to label your child's snack bag "SNACK". This way we can help them make other choices at lunch. It may be necessary to pack it in a separate small bag. This is not optional, snack must come with your child if they are staying after 2:30.
February 3rd 2012 update-
It has been a busy year as we add some new practical life work in our classroom. We have been inspired at a recent Montessori workshop that I attended to add some wonderful opportunities for our children to participate in the classroom in some very practical practical life. The children show us daily how much they enjoy the new work. It is truly the "children's house".
This year on Valentine's Day we are going to abandon the practice of passing out Valentine cards in favor of making meaningful cards and warm fuzzies for each other at school and celebrating with a special event that will express our love and friendship on Valentine's day. Check the Volunteer site to see if you can volunteer for this day.
Our lives, I know, are very full and it can seem that everyone is pulling on a sleeve. I am often told by parents how glad they were that they carved out some time to help in the classroom or contribute in some way. It is an important, and valued gift you give the classroom and your child. Villa recognizes this importance by requesting 10 hours of service from it's parents. Please find time to volunteer, your child is very conscious of your service to the classroom and they always appreciate the contributions of time whether it is at school or at home. Email me if you would like to join in, and I will help you find a spot that works for you and your family.
Right now I know we are in need of:
shelf dusters
flowers every other week
ceramics helpers
A chicken committee to build a small extension on their home and perhaps help find a home for the Rooster. Whoops!
We should have eggs soon, about 20 weeks since we got them. My husband will help build the nesting box pieces this weekend for the children to put together. A volunteer to help at school with the building would be great.
A weekly Guinea Pig cage care person (Cinder will be returning soon in a larger abode)
A birthday celebration volunteer to work on a special project.
A money counter to help the children count their coins for Heifer International.
Our Unit of Study is the body. If any of our parents would like to make an age appropriate presentation to the class, given the number of health professionals in our class that would be terrific. One year the Gears hooked up a heart monitor and we found out how the heart works. Please consider sharing yourself and your gifts with our children. I will set a time that works for you.
Gratitudes:
Thank you for the beautiful gifts that were given over the holidays to all of us. I can't tell you how meaningful they are and how appreciated they are.
Thank you to Fernando's Mother for sewing the wonderful abundance of small napkins for small hands that they use every day and keeping Scholastic going strong.
Thank you to Jeremy's Mother and Diego's Mother for keeping our book shelf full of wonderful books that they sincerely enjoy and helping set up our Community Service to UMOM and Heifer International.
Thank you to the Briggs family for helping clean the Chicken coop this weekend, and checking their water over the holidays.
Thank you to the Marie's Mother who helped us set up the Fresh and Easy Fundraiser.
Thank you to Diego's Mom for helping us in the morning on the playground.
Thank you for all the big, little things, bringing your children on time, signing in and out outside, sending napkins and snack for after school, jumping in and taking on snack for the week when needed, making sure your child has a change of clothes, dropping your child off at carline if separations are tricky, volunteering, helping the school with other projects. Thank you for being a part of this really wonderful community of families. It is a special place because of the care and love your bring to our class.
I love emails, so if you have a question about your child please email me.
September 8th 2011, September 14th update
Reagan Bonham's father will be taking pictures of our children this week to put above the hook. Thanks!
Chanda Campos is our classroom coordinator! Thanks Chanda. You will be hearing from her soon. You can email her at chandacampos@yahoo.com with any questions.
The classroom is settling into familiar routines now and the children are enjoying new friends, new work and new songs to sing. We have been talking to the older children about being peacemakers on the playground, what good friends are like and how include everyone.
Please be sure to put a check for $50 dollars in the envelope for Pizza Friday, written to Tara Fischer. She is handling our orders. I have not received notice from anyone that they are not participating. Thanks.
Jeremy's Mother, Naomi has put together our first community service projects. We will be collecting change for Heifer International, and much needed items for UMOM. These are two wonderful organizations that we would like to support. Look for the purple flier to come home with your child. Visit the websites: http://www.heifer.org/, http://www.umom.org/ UMOM is helping families right here in Arizona, and Heifer International is a TOP listed charity at www.charitywatch.org that aids families around the globe.
The children have been very excited about this project, and enjoy watching the UMOM box, and the Heifer jar of change fill up a little bit more each day. Thank you for your contributions.
Some of our 4 and 5 year olds have been preparing snack in the morning, ironing napkins (K's only), setting the tables for lunch, filling and emptying the dishwasher, as well of course choosing work and receiving lessons.
We had our first music class with Miss Clare, and the children as always enjoyed singing and moving to the music.
Sept. 21st, at 11:00am, we will be singing LIGHT A CANDLE FOR PEACE in the peace garden on the International Day of Peace come sing with us at 11:00am in front of the school around the flag pole. Find the lyrics to the song and listen to it here on Our Songs page. You'll also find some of the songs we have been enjoying in the classroom.
Our older children in the afternoon have begun writing practice and will be starting to write their own stories soon for writers workshop. Remember to tell stories about your life, family and daily happenings. Don't forget our children love to hear about you, when you were little, or here about silly things that happened to you. Elaborate, be a storyteller and add lots of descriptive details. Your stories may help them to better tell their own stories, and more importantly realize that their stories are important.
- Garden day will be Saturday the 24th. We will be ready to plant broccoli, cauliflower, beans, peas, endive, etc. Check out the planting schedule link on our "GREAT LINKS" PAGE. Great Links Please bring transplants or heirloom seeds to plant, or bring fish emulsion, or root stimulator, stepping stones, decorative element for the garden, or just a bag of soil and a green thumb. We will meet at the garden at 9:30am. It would be nice to build a short barrier around the small garden to keep the water in, and it would be wonderful to build a small arbor that the beans could grow on and the children could walk through. If you would like to volunteer your building talents let me know.
Things to remember:
- Use Laragene11 for the password on volunteering, or wish list pages
- Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for arriving by 8:30 each morning. If your child wants to help set up snack they may want to arrive prior to 8:30.
- Encourage lower case letter writing at home. Please do not teach capitals at this time, except for names, or if your child is already writing all their lower case letters. This builds habits that are very hard to change.
- Encourage the use of letter sounds, rather than letter names unless your child is comfortable with all of the letter sounds.
- Find a hook, or doorknob, or other spot for your child's school bag, lunchbox, shoes, nap bag and more when ready. Show your child how to bring them in from the car and take them to their place, and show them how they will remember to find them there when needed in the morning before school. Be vigilant at first providing reminders and showing again and until your child is independent.
- Spend at least 20 minutes of child led playtime with your children as often as possible. Developmental Pediatrician Dr. Greenspan speaks of this floor time as most important in your child's development.
- Let your child hear you problem solve out loud sometimes.
- Fan the flames, and follow your child's interests, and inspire a sense of wonder. Encourage questions, let them hear you wonder about things, and instead of answering their question every time, maybe ask them what they think, or involve them in finding the answers with you. Have fun, there will not be another time like this one.
- If you would like to donate something to the classroom check this link: Wish List/Helping Hands
- I'm am truly grateful for all you do for the classroom. Thank you!
Email me with any questions lwilliams@villamontessori.com

Your children are now using napkins that are provided by the classroom. You will only need to provide a napkin if your child will be staying for after school snack. The table will be set with flatware, plate and napkin at lunch each day. If a little red napkin or plain flatware shows up at home please return the item to the welcome table inside the door (These items are limited so it is important that they are returned)
The Lost and Found
The Lost and Found box is outside our door to make it easier to look through. Please check there if your child is missing something.
Pizza Friday will begin this Friday.
The cost for the first 1/2 of the year is $50. Please place your check in the envelope in the front of the sign in book. Tara will be picking them up each day. The check should be written to Tara Fischer. She will be taking care of Pizza Friday. Our pizza is delicious. It comes from Pizza Heaven, a small Family run Pizzeria on Camelback and 7th street. This is a fundraiser that helps to pay for my attendance to the Montessori Conference, where I take workshops, purchase materials, and am inspired by other Montessorians from all over the country. Please bring your check by Thursday afternoon. Let us know if you do NOT want to participate as well. To Volunteer to set up lunch on this day please go to the Pizza Friday Sign up Link on the left of this page.
- Please email me prior to your child's birthday to let me know when you will be bringing pictures and decorations for the snack tables, so we can celebrate your child's special day at school. We celebrate birthdays Monday thru Thursday only. We don't do birthday celebrations on Friday because we have sharing.
- We will have sharing this Friday. Your child may bring their sharing item in their bag. Please remember that this is not a time to bring toys. Your child may bring an item of interest, artwork they have created or a creation that they have built. Some children have shared their talents with us, their instruments, a book, a picture, or model, a parent, an animal (Please let us know ahead) a stone or seed that was found on the ground. Please take time to invite your child to think about 3 things they might want to tell us about their item. It is not necessary for your child to share something every Friday, though some will want to. Allow your child to be the guide.
Important Reminders:
-
Sign in and out with your first initial and last name (legibly)
-
Your child's drink container should fit inside his or her lunch box. Please know that cold water is always available to them as well.
-
We now have napkins, and spoon and fork set at their table for lunch, and they will place their food onto a plate. (Except the juicy items)
-
Please be sure to speak to staff when picking up your child off the playground in case they have any information to pass on to you
-
Pizza checks $50 in envelope by Thursday afternoon
-
Snack for after school needs to be labeled "Snack".
-
Please use containers with a replaceable lid. It is unfortunate to have to throw away left over food like yogurt etc. just because there is no lid. Please do not send yogurt tubes.
-
Bags, come back to school each day.
-
Kindergarten Items should be in by Monday of next week. The supply list link is found bottom left of this page.
-
Consider being a classroom Coordinator again.
-
Sign up for the Halloween Carnival. The sign up page is inside the sign-in and out book.
Phew! So much to remember. Have a great week.
________________________________________________________________________________
Thank you to those parents that have been signing up to volunteer.

Pizza Friday Sign up has begun; although we will not start until the first Friday in September. Look for the Pizza $ collection envelope in the Sign in and out book next week.
Ceramics will be starting soon as well and we will need volunteers to help the children with their masterpieces.
Cinder thanks you for all the healthy treats, he is enjoying them.
#################### Parent Coordinator Still Needed Desperately!########################
IMPORTANT: The school is closed Friday Aug, 26th for Professional Development of Staff.
Calling all Volunteer Coordinators!!
August 22, 2011
During the first weeks of school, the returning children are finding their materials have been moved around a bit. They are locating new materials and have been generally getting themselves back into the groove. All of our older children have been welcoming and helpful to new children. We already have helpers putting out nap linens with their younger counterparts, children setting up the snack table in the morning, and loading and unloading the dishwasher with our new snack plates and lunch plates.
This year we are using our Friday plates everyday. The children set the tables before lunch with tablecloths, plates and flatware (currently just a spoon). They place their lunch onto a plate and put their lunch boxes away.
This is a new practice that the children seem to enjoy. They are learning about how a table is set and it feels special for them. Soon they will be loading our washing machine with table cloths and napkins that will be used each day. Napkins are still being sewn ( I sideline as a seamstress). These are all lovely extensions of Practical Life. We hope to have flowers soon to adorn our tables and we will add napkins and a fork as well.
This being said you can leave one napkin out of their lunch for now but please remember to include at least one napkin. Keep in mind that your child will be taking out and replacing, so reducing the number of items in their lunch is helpful.
Please label the Snack boldly so they know to leave it in their box for later.
*****If flatware comes home that is not yours PLEASE PLEASE send it back and place it ************
on the welcome table in front.
In the classroom returning students have jumped right in to their academic work quite independently, while lessons are being given to newer children who begin with practical life and sensorial work. Everyone enjoys our songs and games. Currently we are singing The Little Red Caboose, Elephant Went Out to Play, Peace in My Fingers, Our Morning Song, The Ants Go Marching On, Bumpin Along in My Little Red Wagon, among others. The Older children have read part of the Quiltmaker's Gift as well as a Hat for Ivan, Six Dinner Sid, and Amelia Bedelia. We are learning how to take care of each other using the peace table, and simply moving around the classroom, and taking work out, and putting it away. There have been lessons on respecting anothers work, interrupting, and general grace and courtesy skills. The children are building patience and independence while they await new lessons. Some have already located their favorites and choose them regularly. Cleaning up after themselves is part of the work in the room, and it was so beautiful to see some of the returning children rush to the aid of a new child who spilled a whole bowl of beans on the floor. Without any intervention from adults in the room the children found the dust pans and brooms and set out to help their new friend. It is a community in the making. The most important part of the work we do.
We have welcomed Cinder, the Guinnea Pig back to the classroom. He loves fresh lettuce, cilantro, parsley, and carrots. He also likes tart apples. If you would like to send any of these items in with your child it would be greatly appreciated. Please consider signing up to be Cinder Support on the Volunteer page. Kiera has been very very generous over the years and I would like give someone else a chance to volunteer. This, of course, would be included in the 10 hours that Villa requires parents to volunteer.
HELP! No one has volunteered to be Parent Coordinator????? Truly this is a great way to get to know everyone, and be involved in the class. It is absolutely essential to our class and we can't do without your help. Please let me know if you would consider or would like to know more about what this entails.
Please label your Nap Linens BOLDLY as well as any ziplock bags with changes of cloths
PIZZA FRIDAY will NOT start until the First Friday in September. We will be collecting $$ soon for this ongoing fundraiser. Please sign up to Volunteer to help set the tables and serve pizza with your child on a Friday. Look for the Pizza Friday link at the left. These dollars help send me to the Conference each year where I participate in Montessori Workshops and provide your child with delicious pizza from Pizza Heaven. She uses all fresh ingredients and the children love it. Until then please be sure to send a lunch.
Please remember to send your child with one of the tote bags each day to school. They should be bringing it home and hanging it in a special spot each day. This will be a place to put papers, etc... that they are bringing home, and also be a great way to bring a sharing item. If your child has an interesting sharing item from nature or perhaps it is an item from another country or place they may bring it in and place it on the Museum Table. If the Museum table is full they may place it in a box under the Museum table for later viewing.
Our classroom begins at 8:30 please be sure your children arrive by this time. It can be very disruptive to your children when they arrive after 8:30 as we have already begun the day. It is much easier for them to settle into the work period when they arrive on time. Thank you for helping with this.
Please remember to bring the Kindergarten Supplies.
Our Volunteer page is up and running and ready for sign ups. Please sign up for something that suits you or email me if you have questions.
Please see our Pizza Volunteer Page and sign up to serve with your child
Our Wish List/ Helping Hands page is up with Hints for what we need in the class if you would like to contribute.
Our Roster is current.
As soon as I have the Schedule for Ceramics I will post so that you can volunteer to help.
I am continuing to update our Website, so thanks for your patience.
