Some students are switching to binders to aid in organization. If your child
would like to use a binder instead of duotangs, the binder needs to be a 1.5"
binder with no zippers. It is helpful to have pockets on the inside front
and back covers. Students will also need subject tabs for each subject.
Plastic ones are hardier and ones with pockets help keep hand-outs organized,
especially if your child does not open the binder rings to insert hand-outs
in the correct place behind the subject tab.
When students have difficulties staying seated or focussing on their work,
teachers sometimes try alternate seating arrangements. Because I have a few
students using specialized cushions or an exercise ball, several students
expressed an interest in these. I have told the class that students are
welcome to bring an exercise ball from home to try providing that the ball
actually helps them. If students bring an exercise ball from home, it can be
used on the following conditions:
-student's name must be on the ball and the school is not responsible for
loss or damage to it
-it can only be used if it actually helps your child stay seated or
concentrate
-it cannot be used if it becomes a distraction to the student sitting on it
or anyone else
-only the owner of the ball may sit on it
-students can wiggle a little bit on it while sitting but may not bounce,
swing excessively from side to side, or roll about on it, nor can the ball be
kicked, tossed or rolled around the classroom!
Check out my links page for awesome sites for homework, skills practice,
educational games, research projects, and arts and crafts. Sites are added
regularly to complement current units of study. Some sites have a little
of everything in them, and cover most subject areas. Check back regularly as
new sites are often added. If you know of sites that students or their
parents would like, please e-mail them to me. Please continue to use my site
throughout the summer to learn new information and maintain academic skills.
If you have questions about homework, or any other concerns or questions,
please call me at school, write a note in the agenda, drop by after school
(I'm there most afternoons) or email me: msallen5@shaw.ca
