    Ralph Waldo Emerson, from the mid-1800’s, and Gavin DeGraw, from present-day, both understand how easy it is to conform because of the pressures of society, but they also believe the real challenge is to stay true to one's self.

    Do you agree or disagree with their position on conformity and staying true to one's self? Cite specific examples from Emerson's "Self-Reliance" and DeGraw's "I Don't Want to Be" to justify your response.

    Part II: Reflection

    After reading/viewing The Crucible, respond again to the statements on the Anticipation Guide. Then, reply by writing a 100-word or more “Deep Thoughts” response to a statement where your belief changed since reading/viewing the play. If you had no change in your beliefs, write about a different statement than you responded to in Part I.
