Welcome to Room 3!    October 24-28
Fall-Conference-Schedule--2011.docx-  new and improved!  :-)
Please check the above conference schedule. Almost everyone has signed up- yea! If you don't have an appointment, please email or send a note to Mrs. Weie asap with your choice. Thank you!

Please encourage your child daily to use their very best "S.C.O.R.E." behavior.
Shout-outs to First Grade students of the week from Room Four:

Way to go!  Jay-Jay Blue is proud of you!
(Look at their pictures posted proudly in the MPR.)

National Bring Your Teddy Bear to School Day: We all had so much fun on Teddy Bear Day!  I would like to post pictures on our website, but would like parent feedback regarding having your child's picture posted.  Please contact me if you would prefer I do not post your child's photos on our website.
Volunteers  : I truly appreciate your help. The schedule has been posted to the website and I sent hard copies to parents who are scheduled. Everyone has received security clearance and I would love for you to start now, if you haven't already.
Room Parents:A special thank you to Barb Salamoff who has graciously offered to be our "point person" for room mom. Yea, Barb!    We do still need a small committee of parents to support Barb in the task. Please e-mail me if you are willing to help her. Thank you! Our  class parties are simple affairs these days, and should not require too much time. Thank you!
Girl Scouts: Notes will be going home in Thursday folders this week. There are currently openings for our First Grade Daisy Troop. Parent leaders, Mei Ramos and Barb Salamoff may be contacted with questions. Go Daisies!
Art: Be sure to ask your child about our lesson on torn paper art with Fall Leaves. Pumpkin art and Fall Leaf art will hang in our hallway this month.
R.T.I. (Response to Instruction): We have completed our first two weeks of reading.  Your child may be commuting to Miss Ferguson's class for reading, or may be staying with Mrs. Weie. This week we will be adding a group who will receive instruction from our own Mrs. Swancoat, allowing for even smaller R.T.I. groups overall.    This week we will focus on blending short /u/ words and on the consonants q, j, and z. Our comprehension skill is "summarizing". Children who leave First Grade not being able to read have a very difficult time ever catching up, so we take our jobs teaching reading very seriously.
E.I.R.M.: (
Early Intervention Reading Model)  Based on test scores and teacher observation, some kinder and 1st grade students will be invited to participate in a very special program which was specifically designed to strengthen and boost their phonics and reading fluency skills. They will benefit by receiving reading instruction two times a day at a very small teacher/student ratio.
P.E.:  Our P.E. instruction has been going very well. Please be sure your child is prepared by wearing closed-toed tennis shoes and shorts or pants that are easy to move in. You may also choose to apply sunscreen or send a hat on those days.
(Dresses, sandals, crocs, and ballet flats are not recommended)  We will meet every day from 9:25-9:55, except for Thursdays when we have Comp./Lib. (That would be a great day for the kids to choose dresses or other shoes to wear.)
Math : Some of you are still not using the math workbook you all received at BTSN for homework. Please check the HW cover sheet carefully, tear out that page, and return it with the rest of the HW.
Please practice math facts daily with your child. Help them to see that the (+) and (-) facts are in the same "number family" and will contain the same members. We want the kids to comprehend early on how reciprocal (+) & (-) facts can be.
This week we also begin our "Incredible Equations" challenge math.We will also write and tell verbally what we have learned in our new math journals.

See you soon!
