3rd Quarter 2010

Friday, March 19:  Daily allusion.  Don't forget daily allusion quiz is on 
Monday over #16-30.  Students participated in a socratic seminar today in 
class.  Make sure to keep up in your reading and have a DJ focus by Monday 
(just write down either #1 or #2 and your name).  DJ focus is not changeable 
once you've picked one.

Thursday, March 18:  SSR.  Act I quiz.  Students watched Act I.  All graded 
work was returned.  Make sure to read both articles under handout 
section: "Romeo and Juliet in Bosnia" and "Love Crosses Borders."  Print out 
and annotate text.  Bring both with you to class tomorrow for Socratic 
seminar.

Wednesday, March 17:  Daily allusions.  We went over last night's reading.  
We also read the next scene (refer to reading schedule). Students took notes 
on play elements as well as tragedy (see a peer for notes).  Keep up in 
reading and figurative language examples.  Act I quiz tomorrow.
 
Tuesday, March 16:  We went over last night's reading.  We also read the next 
scene (refer to reading schedule).  We also went over the 1st figurative 
language example in the Act I packet.  Tonight, complete your reading and any 
related figurative language examples from the text.

Monday, March 15:  SSR/daily allusions.  We went over correct MLA style for 
the Shakespeare brochure project.  Based on this review, students were asked 
to go home and revise their works cited and turn it in AGAIN tomorrow with no 
grade penalty.  Students were given the Romeo and Juliet reading schedule, 
Act I figurative language handout, and DJ essay choice topics.  We went over 
the general prologue and learned a simple way of working on text 
comprehension.  Use the study guide under the handout section to help focus 
your reading. Make sure to follow both the reading schedule and the major 
deadlines posted on the reading schedule.  Also, don't forget to start 
memorizing your speech (either Romeo's or Juliet's famous speech).  All items 
described above can be found under the handout section of this website.  

Friday, March 12:  SSR/daily allusion.  Students were given one last day in 
the media center to complete their Shakespeare research brochures.  This is 
due Monday along with the printed rubric and works cited page.

Thursday, March 11:  SSr/daily allusion.  Students worked on their 
Shakespeare research brochure that is due on Monday, March 15.  See handout 
section for PowerPoint instructions.

Wednesday, March 10:  SSR/daily allusion.  Students worked on their 
Shakespeare research brochure that is due on Monday, March 15.  See handout

Tuesday, March 9:  SSR/daily allusion.  Student completed the perfect mate 
form - make sure you have your parents complete their portion tonight.  
Students took notes, reviewing figurative language and examples.  They also 
worked with 2 short stories identifying examples.  Tonight, finish perfect 
mate handout, create 3 examples of each type of figurative language (submit 
to turnitin.com AND print out a copy to turn in to class tomorrow).  Finally, 
look over the Shakespeare examples to see if you can make sense of any of 
them.  All handouts from today are on the handout section of this website.

Monday, March 8:  SSR/daily allusion.  Students finished watching LOTF video 
and also finished their movie notes.  They also returned their LOTF novels.

Friday, March: 5:  Substitute.  SSR.  Students viewed the black/white version 
of Lord of the Flies and completed an accompying handout.  They also turned 
in their essays.  Please bring your LOTF book to class on Monday.

Thursday, March 4:  Substitute.  SSR.  LOTF timed write.  Don't forget, LOTF 
final draft essay is due tomorrow.  Make sure you have the works cited page, 
highlight the 5 LOTF vocab words used in your essay, print out a copy of 
everything to bring to class, AND submit a final copy to turnitin.com by 
8:15AM.

Wednesday, March 3:  Substitute.  SSR.  Students traded papers a few times in 
class and conducted peer revisions on their complete rough drafts.  Final 
draft is due on Friday.

Tuesday, March 2:  SSR/daily allusion.  Students revised a peer's paragraph, 
checking for paragraph structure.  We also went over the concluding 
paragraph.  See links section for the concluding paragraph information.  
Tonight, assemble your entire essay (all 5 paragraphs + the works cited 
page).  Also, don't forget, you need to use 5 Lord of the Flies vocab words 
in your essay.  Make sure to highlight them on the final draft.

Monday, March 1:  SSR/daily allusion.  Students learned how to create 
parenthetical citations and create correct entries on their works cited 
page.  By tomorrow, please have BP #2 typed and ready to turn it (no need for 
a turnitin.com submission).  You can also get a headstart on the works cited 
page.  For notes from today, please refer to the handout section and the 
important links section of this website.

Friday, February 26:  SSR/daily allusion.  We went over CD integrations for 
the research facts and transitions between the research CM and the LOTF CD.  
See handout section for the PowerPoint with notes.  Students received graded 
work back.  This weekend please complete two assignments.  First, get as much 
information from 2 of your internet sources.  Use the handout you received in 
class (see handout section for another copy if you need it).  Second, write 
the 1st body paragraph of your essay (this was affectionaly titled "mega 
paragaph" today in class).  This means 3 research CDs and 3 connected LOTF 
CDs.  Type it, print it out, and submit it to turnitin.com

Thursday, February 25:  SSR/daily allusion.  Students turned in their daily 
allusion notes and took the first daily allusion test.  We went over the 
rhetorical precis and students were given class time to work on it.  This is 
due in typed paper form tomorrow AND to turnitin.com.  Students were also 
given the LOTF essay organization sheet.  This is also due tomorrow.  All 
handouts and notes are on the handout page of this website.

Wednesday, February 24:  SSR/daily allusion.  Socratic Seminar.  Daily 
allusion test over 1-15 tomorrow.  Don't forget to bring your daily allusion 
notes with you to class!

Tuesday, February 23:  SSR/daily allusions.  We went over vocab and any 
questions about graded work.  Students were given the remainder of the period 
to work on a NEW 2-chunk body paragraph, allowing them time to meet one-on-
one with Mrs. Williams for writing conferences.  By tomorrow you need to have 
a TYPED printed copy of your 2-chunk, submission of 2-chunk to turnitin.com, 
read the last chapter in the novel (along with vocab and DJ entry), AND read 
and analyzed two poems connected to the reading for tomorrow's Socratic 
seminar (poems are under handout section).

Monday, February 22:  Chapters 5-10 quiz.  If you were absent, please email 
Mrs. Williams if you will take the quiz before/after school tomorrow.  
Students were shown 2 student examples of well-written commentary for the 2-
chunk paragraph.  They then received their own graded paragraph back.  They 
also received a chart to organize their research AND their chapter DJ.  
Tonight, complete this chart in its entirety (see handout section).  Also, 
don't forget to keep up in your reading and vocab.

Friday, February 19:  SSR/daily allusion.  Students highlighted CM from last 
night's paragraph.  The rest of the period was used for library research.  
You need to have 4 NEW sources for this round of 10 facts.  Make sure to use 
the handout (under handout section - same form as the 1st 10).  All sourced 
need to be written (no "", *, see above, etc).  This is due on Monday along 
with vocab, reading, and DJ entries.

Thursday, February 18:  SSR/daily allusion.  We went over last night's 
reading and vocabulary.  Students exchanged facts from yesterday's research.  
Students learned the 2-chunk paragraph structure.  Tonight, please write your 
paragraph, submit it to turnitin.com by 8:15 AM tomorrow morning and PRINT 
out a copy to turn in.  If you need a reminder on the 2-chunk notes, see the 
handout section.

Wednesday, February 17:  SSR/daily allusion.  We went over chapters 1-5 as a 
class.  Students were given a research sheet and then they spent the 
remainder of the period in the media center researching their chosen 
allegorical topic.  This sheet is due tomorrow.  Sheet is under handout 
section.  Also, keep up in reading/vocab and complete 1 more entry in your DJ.

Tuesday, February 16:  SSR/daily allusion.  Quiz over chapters 1-4 (if you 
were absent, please email Ms. Williams if you plan to take the quiz 
before/after school tomorrow).  We quickly went over chapter 2-4 vocab.  We 
discussed Chapters 1-4 and shared allegorical connections.  By tomorrow, 
please have the assigned reading/vocab complete, add two more entries to your 
DJ from chapter 5 AND pick a DJ focus.

Monday, February 15:  No school.

Friday, February 12:  No school.

Thursday, February 11:  SSR/daily allusion.  We read and discussed the 
allegorical meaning of "Animal School."  We discussed Chapter 1 of LOTF and 
went over the vocabulary.  We also talked about the assigned dialectical 
journal.  By Tuesday, have the required reading/vocab for LOTF complete and 
complete 4 DJ entries - any focus is okay.  Handouts are online.

Wednesday, February 10:  Daily allusion.  Students were issued a Lord of the 
Flies novel.  They also received the reading schedule/vocabulary list.  
Please follow the directions on this handout and adhere to the reading 
schedule.  Also, students received a allegorical connection 4-square chart.  
Tonight, as you read chapter 1, see which allegorical connection makes the 
most sense to you.  This may be your focus for your upcoming essay focus.  
Students spent the remainder of the period in the proscenium listening to the 
counselors about how to select courses for the 2010-11 school year.  All of 
today's handouts are under the handout section of this website.

Tuesday, February 9:  SSR/daily allusion.  We read aloud the article "Why 
Boys Become Vicious" by William Golding (see handout section).  We then 
discussed the article and its connection to last night's reading.  Tonight, 
type a 1 page (in MLA format) free response to both articles.  Print out a 
copy and bring it with you to class tomorrow. In addition, please submit your 
response to turnitin.com.  We also went over correct MLA formatting in class.

Monday, February 8:  SSR/daily allusion. Seating chart established.  Students 
took a timed write test on last week's Allegory of the Cave.  If you were 
absent, please plan on taking it before/after school.  You will need 1 hour 
for the makeup.  Email Ms. Williams with your preferred time.  Tonight, read 
the article on the "Death of James Bulger."  You do NOT need to print this 
out.  Make at least 1 comment per section on the article on a seperate sheet 
of paper.  When making comments, place them under the appropriate article 
heading.  There are 33 sections. You will turn this in tomorrow.

Friday, February 5:  SSR/daily allusions.  Socratic seminar.  Review Allegory 
of the Cave this weekend.  Timed write on Monday.

Thursday, February 4:  SSR/daily allusion.   Students picked their daily 
allusions.  Make sure to adhere to your due date.  Students were placed in 
small groups and then asked to analyze Allegory of the Cave through a poster 
activity.  Tomorrow we will have a Socratic Seminar.  Make sure you bring 
your annotated Allegory of the Cave AND look over the Socratic Seminar 
guidelines which are posted under the handout section of this website.

Wednesday, February 3:  We went over the class syllabus.  This needs to be 
signed and returned tomorrow.  Students also received the daily allusion 
assignment and were asked to have their top ten picked by tomorrow. They also 
took notes on the 1st one on the list. Students were assigned a 200 word 
letter introducing themeselves to Ms. Williams.  This too is due tomorrow 
along with a turnitin.com submission.  Students were given time to create an 
account on turnitin.com (for your reference, the class id is 3114516 and the 
password is williams).  Finally, make sure you read "The Allegory of the 
Cave" by tomorrow.  All handouts are available under the handout section of 
this website.
