Kindergarten Handbook

The Kindergarten Handbook will be handed out at Parent Orientation Night!
Keep scrolling down for the web handbook.

Dear Parents,
Welcome to the Christ Lutheran School Kindergarten program. We hope
this handbook will answer many of your questions. Please keep it throughout
the year and refer to it when you need a “refresher”. Your child may enjoy
looking through it with you.

We look forward to working with you as a team to help your children bloom
and develop in their own special ways. We know that God has great plans for
all of us and it is our great delight as teachers to watch the beginning of
His work as “our” Kindergarteners grow.

We will pray for you and your child regularly and we ask for your
prayers as well: that God will guide us in all we say and do as we undertake
this most precious task.

							Blessings and peace!

ABSENCES See page. 14-15 in the School Parent Handbook; please
confine family vacations to the holiday schedule listed on the school
calendar. This limits the interruptions to the academic process for your
child.

ANIMALS If you wish to share your pet with the class please check
with us for a time when you may bring it in for a short visit. We DO need to
be notified in advance. (No large dogs, please!)

ARRIVAL We open our classroom door at 8:30 a.m. when the morning
bell rings. Our day officially begins at 8:45. Your child is considered
TARDY if arriving after the 8:45 bell and must go to the office for a tardy
slip before coming into the room (see School Parent Handbook p.14). When you
bring your child to school, please park your car and WALK your child to the
classroom. If your child needs to leave early, you will need to sign out in
the office before coming to the classroom.

BOOK ORDERS At various times during the year book order forms are
sent in the mailer. This allows you to purchase books and computer games at
great prices with no tax or shipping costs.

BIRTHDAYS We will schedule your child’s snack day on or near
his/her birthday. We like our school celebrations to be a calm (low key)
and loving reminder that “we’re glad you’re here.” You may wish to send in a
special treat, but we ask that you do not send in a birthday cake or
cupcakes. Here are some ideas for birthday treats that the children enjoy:
  mini muffins
  Jell-O jigglers
  frozen treats
  small party favor bags
  tiny sandwiches
  pizza
  Ziplock bags with “trail mix

CHURCH AND SUNDAY SCHOOL We keep a record of church and Sunday
school attendance and will be asking you to help by filling out a monthly
form.

CHAPEL Preschool through 4th grade meet once a week (usually on
Fridays) for a simple worship service. Weekly offering envelopes will be
sent home for support for various mission opportunities through the year.

Dd is for…

DRESS CODE Comfortable play clothes are best for Kindergarten. We
use paint, dirt and glue; we sit on the floor, climb, roll, tumble and jump;
we get hot and sweaty. Please make sure your child dresses in layers and
wears shoes that are appropriate for running, recess and gym time.
Please remember that Kindergarten students may not wear boots. Other
information is in the School Parent Handbook p. 17

DENTIST At this age, have dental checkups every six months.

ENVELOPES See Mm is for mailers

EMERGENCIES Our school has well rehearsed plans of action in the event of
emergencies (See School Parent Handbook p.7-8) You may want to send a
reassuring letter for your child along with a family photo and label
as “emergency letter”. We will keep them in our emergency pack.

EARRINGS Girls may wear small or stud style earrings only.

Ff is for…

FIELD TRIP We may take some field trips during the school year
and you will be invited to drive or accompany us. You will need to fill out
a volunteer driver form. We ask that you do not take our Kindergarten
children out of our school day to join another class field trip. They can
look forward to that trip when they are in that grade.

Gg is for…

GYM DAY Unless our schedule changes, Wednesdays are usually our
day to use the school gym. We learn many basic skills leading up to team and
individual sports as well as important large motor skills. Please make sure
your child wears shorts/pants and appropriate gym shoes.

GOOD-BYES Please say good-bye before you reach the classroom door.
(We have a special “good-bye” place set aside) It helps with separation
anxiety if you matter-of-factly drop your child off at the classroom. If you
have a special message for us, please use the mailer. If you need to talk to
another parent, please keep the doorway open.

Hh is for…

HOMEWORK Homework is sent home once a week (usually on Fridays)
and needs to be returned on the listed due day (usually Thursdays). You WILL
need to have school supplies available at home – pencils, crayons and/or
markers, scissors, & glue. Unless otherwise stated all written homework is
done in regular lead pencil. If your child is absent for an extended period
of time we will staple together a packet of “make-up” work.

Ii is for…

ILLNESS Your child needs to be at home if he/she has had a fever, repeated
vomiting, or diarrhea within the past 24 hours. If there is heavy coughing
or nasal discharge, home is the best place to be. If your child will miss
several days, please call and we’ll make arrangements so you can pick up the
school work

LOVE During the year things will happen to disappoint or upset us.
Remember, our desire is to show love to each other as Jesus does. “Be kind
and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ,
God forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32

LUNCH We eat lunch in the Day Care room at 12:00. We are working
on building healthy eating habits, so we ask that each day you send in a
nutritious lunch including a protein, whole grain, fruit and/or vegetable
(100% fruit juice included). Also, please pack a napkin and needed
silverware. Do not send in candy or sodas for lunch or snacks. We do not use
a refrigerator for storing lunches or a microwave for “warm ups”. Leftover
lunch will serve as an afternoon snack so pack a little something extra.
Milk may be purchased from the office.

MAILER The clear envelope in your child’s tote bag (see T for
Tote bag) is a major way for us to communicate. It will hold the days’
completed assignments, homework (given on Fridays and returned the next
Thursday) and any notes home; feel free to use it to send notes to us. The
mailer needs to come to school EVERY DAY!!

MEDICATION If your child needs to take medication the school
office will keep and dispense it to your child. (see Parent Handbook p. 20)
We are NOT allowed to give your child any medication but you can send in
chapstick (labeled with child’s name) and we can keep it for your child’s
use.

PARTIES Birthday parties are a BIG deal in Kindergarten! Our goal is to
keep feelings from being hurt and to teach good manners. We understand (and
advise) that parties at this age be limited in size. Our wish is that
parties are not discussed at school in a hurtful fashion, and that
invitations are not handed out at school unless everyone (or all the
girls/boys) has been invited. We would prefer that all social arrangements
be handled discretely or away from school. The office can provide you with
mailing addresses.

	PICK-UP
•	Half day session ends at 12:00. Children are picked up at the church
steps. If you are late, please park in a designated parking space and come
to the Day Care room for your child (there will be no Day Care charge).
•	Full day session ends at 3:00. Children are picked up at the church
steps. Children not picked up by 3:20 will be taken to Day Care (charges
WILL apply) On Thursdays, all students stay for a full day.

PICTURES We will be taking many pictures during the school year,
particularly on special occasions. You will receive information from the web
site Snapfish via email, and you may order whatever prints you would care to
have. Please make sure we have a current email address.

Rr is for….

READING Read, read, read, read, read! Read with your child...in
the car… on a star…in the park…in the dark…(wait a minute, that’s another
book!)
When you read to your child they are encouraged to become readers. We spend
all year making “word to print” connections. The more one-on-one reading
with your child the better reader your child can become!

REPORT CARDS Progress reports occur four times during the year. Parent-
teacher conferences are in November and April and report cards come at the
end of each semester. Don’t feel you need to limit yourself to these
checkpoints because we are happy to meet with you as the need arises. Please
contact us with a note, call or email to arrange a specific time (see Qq for
questions).

SCHOOL SUPPLIES We provide classroom supplies, tote bags and
mailers. Parents are responsible for snacks (see snacks on next page),
napkins, Kleenex, 5 oz. drinking cups or Lysol type wipes. Look your
assignment on the monthly “snack calendar” in your child’s mailer.

SHARE TIME We will begin sharing time (Show and Tell) on Tuesday during
Cc week. Your child may bring something to share that fits our current theme
or letter sound (the K newsletter and snack calendar will help you there).
Your child needs to be able to tell the class how it fits with our theme(s)
and/or letter sound.

SHOE TYING This is a “home grown” skill (best learned at home) which is
where we put on our shoes . Please work on this during some peaceful
moments at home – yes, there must be some peaceful moments!! The flat,
cotton shoe laces work best for staying tied.

SNACK TIME (around 9:15 a.m.) You will be asked to take turns providing a
daily snack for the class (26) with a goal of healthy, low fat, and low
sugar items. (Watch for the Kindergarten Calendar each month) The snack will
include milk, 100% fruit juice or lemonade. We do NOT serve soda or punch.
Snack may be as simple or elaborate as you and your child want, so please,
if possible, involve your child in the choosing and preparation. Snack is
shared “family style” at each center, with the students serving themselves
while using polite table manners. Please bring snack items to the classroom
unless your child is in morning Day Care. Then the Day Care staff will help
deliver it to the classroom.

We can heat up snack as needed. Please send bowls or big cups and plastic
silverware if needed for serving.

Snacks need to all be the same. No variety packs, please!!
