Word of the Day

These are the Word of the Day vocabulary words we have learned so far. Our 
goal is to learn 100 words by the end of 4th grade. There will be a quiz every 
time we complete 10 words so be sure to review your words and definitions 
before each quiz. 

#1 BUFFOON - a silly person; a fool; a trickster
#2 ENCROACH - to intrude onto someone else's space or rights; to trespass
#3 SMITTEN - very much in love
#4 RUTHLESS - cruel and without pity; merciless; very determined to do
whatever is necessary to succeed
#5 OBSOLETE - out of date; no longer useful or needed because something newer
and better has been made
#6 PRANCE - to walk, moving your body in a confident way so people will notice
you.
#7 AQUEDUCT - a large pipe for carrying water a long way
#8 GOAD - to make someone do something by annoying him or her until he or she
does it.
#9 FLOUNDER - to have a hard time doing or saying something; a flat ocean fish
#10 INHABIT - to live in a particular place
#11 CONCEAL - to hide; to keep from sight
#12 HOAX - a practical joke; a trick; something intended to deceive.
#13 SHODDY - badly or cheaply made; unfair and dishonest
#14 ABDUCT - to take something away by force; to kidnap
#15 GAPE - to look at something in amazement with your mouth open; to become
widely open
#16 BLISS - perfect happiness; joy
#17 AMBLE - to walk slowly in a relaxed way
#18 ADJACENT - next to something; near or close
#19 SWELTER - to be unpleasantly hot
#20 WARY - careful and worried about danger or problems; to be alert;cautious;
on guard; watchful
#21 AGHAST - suddenly feeling or looking shocked; shocked, frightened, 
terrified
#22 PASSIVE - inactive; acted upon but not acting in return; not having a lot
of involvement in something that is happening
#23 AVERT - to prevent something bad from happening; to keep from happening; 
to ward off; to turn away
#24 PREVAIL - to be victorious; to manage to win or remain in control after a
struggle or argument. 
#25 SCAMPER - to run with short quick steps, like a child or small animal
#26 FOWL - any bird raised or hunted for food
#27 RUNT - undersized; small animal or person
#28 WAIL - to cry out loudly, usually from pain
#29 INNATE - some skill you've had since birth; inborn; a natural 
characteristic
#30 CATAMARAN - a boat (usually a sailboat) with two parallel hulls; a raft or
log tied together
#31 ARCHAIC - old fashioned; obsolete; belonging to the past
#32 FJORD - a long narrow inlet from the sea between steep cliffs or hills
#33 WITHER - to become shriveled, shrunken or dried up, usually from heat or
something stressful
#34 CITADEL - a fortress overlooking a city; a stronghold
#35 LIMBER - flexible; bendable; to become flexible
#36 ZANY - silly, funny, crazy but likable 
#37 RAGE - violent explosive anger; a fad or craze
#38 CULPRIT - a person guilty of doing something wrong; the cause of a problem
#39 DISMANTLE - to take apart, pull down, or disassemble
#40 CALAMITY - a very bad, unexpected event that causes a lot of damage or 
suffering
#41 PARAPET – a low wall or railing
#42 AWRY – to not happen in the way that was planned; wrong; amiss; twisted or 
turned
#43 PROTOTYPE – a model of a new car, machine, etc., used in order to test the 
design before it is produced in large 
#44 ZEAL – eagerness to do something; showing great enthusiasm for a goal.
#45 PERTURB – to make uneasy; to upset; to make angry or irritated
#46 LITERATE – having the ability to read and write
#47 EMBARK – to go onto a ship or airplane; to set out on a trip or adventure
#48 POROUS – filled with holes
#49 STIFLE – to stop something from happening; to hold back
#50 COLOSSAL – enormous; gigantic; huge in size; massive
#51 FRENZY - a state of wild excitement
#52 DOUSE - to cover in a liquid or spray; to drench
#53 EMBED - to put something firmly and deeply into something else
#54 INTUITION - the ability to understand or know something is true based on 
your feelings rather than facts; gut instinct
#55 DERELICT - deserted, abandoned, neglected; someone who has no home or 
money
#56 CREVICE - a crack forming an opening
#57 JAR - to bump or shake; to have an irritating effect
#58 SCOWL - an angry frown 
#59 RAZE - to level to the ground; to tear down or demolish
#60 MINISCULE - very small
#61 DIVULGE - to give someone information, especially about something that was 
secret.
#62 UNWIELDY - hard to handle or manage; clumsy to handle; heavy and difficult 
to carry
#63 PACIFY - to make someone calm and quiet after he/she has been angry or 
upset, or to make a group or area peaceful.
#64 DETEST - to hate; to dislike intensely 
#65 COMPILE - to gather together facts from different places into a report or 
book.
#66 WILT - to become limp; to droop down, usually from lack of water or energy
#67 DIVERGE - to go in different directions from a common point
#68 PALTRY - too small to be useful or important
#69 PRONE - likely to do something or suffer from something; lying flat
#70 TIRADE - a long, angry, scolding speech
#71 MENTOR - an experienced person who advises and helps a less experienced 
person.

#73 FRET - to worry about small or unimportant things, or to make someone do 
this; to be troubled or worried
#74 BELITTLE - to say or do something to make someone or something seem less 
important; to put someone down

#88 TREK – to make a long and difficult trip; a difficult journey
#89 AWE – a feeling of great respect and admiration; wonder and respect.
#90 NIMBLE – able to move quickly, easily, and skillfully; clever and quick in 
thought
#91 UNRULY – difficult or impossible to control; disobedient
#92 UNDERDOG – a person or team that is not expected to win
