I am so excited that we will be working together this year. Below is some information that will be helpful as we begin the year...

Transitions
3rd Grade is a year with much growth and transitions. Students will be moving from being in the "primary" side of elementary school to the " upper" side of elementary school. We will be working together to help students take responsibility for their supplies, classwork, homework, etc.
Behavior Management
Our behavior management plan shifts as well. We no longer use the card system for daily communication between parents and teacher. Students are responsible for following procedures and getting work turned in at school. They will earn and pay "dinosaurs" and "pony beads" as part of our plan. We use these to earn privileges and rewards at various times during the year. It is a fun way to practice division and an encouragement to participate fully and appropriately in class.
Planners
Another big transition is communication. Sometime during the first 2 weeks each student will receive their own Planner. This is where the majority of communication should take place. The planner should be filled out by the student at school (we do this together each day) and brought home every day. The student is to show their parent the planner and discuss the work they have to do. After the parent has seen the planner and discussed work and any other messages in it, please sign it. You are not signing that all work is completed, but that the planner was filled out by the student and shown to you. This is the best place for you to send notes to me and it is how I will send notes to you. This is one of the ways we help the students with their time management and responsibility. Some students will need lots of reminding and that is fine, we are establishing a habit that will continue to be reinforced throughout their time at City Tree. Thank you in advance for your support with the use of Planners.
Communication

Planner

This is the absolute best way to get a message to me. Planners should come to school EVERY day. I check the planners for a parent signature by 8:45 each morning. If you have a short message for me, there is a place in the planner to write. I will also write messages to you in the planner, so regardless of how you communicate with me, please check the planner for a response.

Homework

Homework changes from weekly to daily this year. It is important that each student has their own backpack, pocket folder (not 3 ring binder, please) and supplies. Papers are easily lost if they are “stuffed” in a backpack or planner, and time is wasted when students do not have their own supplies to work with.

Email

My commitment is to check my email (Kristin.marney@citytree.org) during the 10:00 morning recess. There are times this will not be possible, but I am pretty consistent with this. I often check before leaving school also, but will not promise that.

Classroom Message Basket

There is a little metal basket outside the classroom door with a note that says “Messages for Mrs. Marney.” You are welcome to leave a note in the basket. I am usually able to check it once the students are working, but sometimes as late as morning recess.

Office Phone

If something urgent comes up that you need communicated to me and it is past 10:00am, you may call the office (and ask them to leave a note in my box. I check my office mail box at 7:30am and 11:40am.

Classroom Phone

You may leave a message on the classroom phone. I try to check this at recess as well, but returning phone calls is more difficult than sending an email as there are frequently students around even during our recess.

Thank you and Welcome!

Mrs. Marney
