Dear Parents,
Welcome to first grade! We have a great program this year. Our language arts curriculum includes phonics, comprehension skills, spelling, grammar, narrative and expository writing. We will learn to write in cursive. We will also be learning math, Christian education, science, social studies, art, Spanish, music, physical education, and computers. Reading is given a great deal of importance in the curriculum. Homework will begin on Monday, Sept. 19. All procedures and policies will be discussed at “Back to School” Night on Thursday, Sept. 15. Hope to see you there!
Since first grade is such a change from kindergarten, many children require a period of adjustment. Being required to “work” all day is new to them. They may require more sleep at night since their rest/nap time is now eliminated. They may complain that first grade is too hard. This is not unusual and will soon disappear. Please be supportive and tell them that you understand how they feel but that you know they can handle it. If, however, you notice extreme anxiety problems, please let me know. The sooner we deal with any problems that might occur, the easier they are to solve.
If you arrive before 8:30, please wait in the hall with your child or bring them to the proper place:
Before 8:00 Roof
8:00 – 8:30 MWF Geneva Room
T/Th Roof
If you arrive after 8:30, please bring your child to the Geneva Room. Please do not open the door to put things away, as this is a distraction to the rest of the class. This can be done when they return to class or at recess.
I am on duty from 7:45 – 3:15. If you need to talk, please email, leave a note on my desk or call the school and leave a message. My email address is liz.cramer@citytree.org.
