Dear Parents,
I am looking forward to working with your child during his/her first grade year. Our classroom climate is set up to cultivate and encourage responsible behavior. The total classroom behavior management program needs to be shared by the child, teacher, and parent. Each child in our class has the right to learn and I have the right to teach. Respect for authority is essential.
RULES FOR ROOM 300:
1) Listen carefully.
2) Follow directions.
3) Work quietly. Do not disturb others who are working.
4) Respect others. Be kind with your words and actions.
5) Respect school and personal property.
6) Work and play safely.
CHILDREN NEED TO EXPERIENCE THE RESULTS OF THEIR CHOICES. RESPONSIBILITY IS LEARNED AND MAINTAINED BY REWARDS AND CONSEQUENCES.
IF YOUR CHILD CHOOSES TO FOLLOW THE RULES, THE FOLLOWING REWARDS WILL BE GIVEN:
· Your child will stay on green and he/she will bring home a green card.
· Your child will be given a Gold Slip by a teacher or T.A. for excellent behavior or for being a good helper. Gold slips can be used to “buy” items from the Grab Bag.
· Your child will receive verbal praise and positive notes to take home.
IF YOUR CHILD CHOOSES NOT TO FOLLOW THE RULES THE FOLLOWING CONSEQUENCES WILL APPLY:
Their green card will be pulled from the chart. This will occur in the following steps:
- Child receives one verbal warning.
- For small problems (being mean, talking instead of working or listening, etc.), I will write names on the board. Three strikes = pulling a card to yellow.
- Five strikes = orange card.
- Six strikes = red card. More than six = office and a call home.
With this method we can work better with small problems instead of giving too many warnings. Bigger problems (hurting another child, not telling the truth, copying someone else’s work, etc.) will result in a pulled card - no strikes.
A yellow, orange, or red card will be sent home with the broken rule written on the card.
PINK SLIPS given to your child by a T.A. or teacher (other than the classroom teacher) for misbehavior will be placed in the parent folder. Please sign and return it the following day.
FOR SEVERE DISRUPTION: YOUR CHILD WILL BE SENT IMMEDIATELY TO THE OFFICE AND YOU WILL BE NOTIFIED.
I will discuss this behavior management plan with the entire class. Discipline is a shared responsibility. I would appreciate your help in reviewing these rules, rewards, and consequences with your child. Reinforce your child at home if he/she demonstrates positive behavior. Carry out appropriate consequences with your child when necessary. Our primary goal is to assist students in developing a high degree of self- direction and personal responsibility. Parents and teachers cannot make students become responsible people but we can set up environments that foster the development of responsibility and recognize and reinforce responsibility when it occurs. Thank you for your support this year.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Cramer
