Island of the Blue Dolphins Project Time!
A letter was sent home today which you need to read over and send back the bottom portion signed by you and your child. It details how to successfully complete the project. You can purchase decor and characters at Michael's if you choose to, but it's not necessary to purchase anything to have a successful project. It can easily be made with household items. However, make sure that the decor is appropriate to the story and time period. There are photo samples if you click on the link to the left of the screen titled "ISLAND PROJECTS." You can also find a similar copy of the letter (I will replace it soon), and a grading rubric. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to let me know.

Walk Through California Next Thursday!
Your child has memorized both their "Expert Card" and the answer to the card's question. Costumes are recommended, but not required. A simple pair of jeans and a white t-shirt is fine. Add a bandana and/or a flannel shirt or jacket, and your child will look like a gold miner. Add a cowboy or straw hat if desired. Native American style clothing, or traditional Mexican clothing are also wonderful choices that represent our state's past. Parents are welcome to attend. The presentation lasts from 12:00PM until 2:30 PM. You can stay for the entire presentation, or join us for a portion. Video cameras are only allowed during your child's specific performance and not the entire presentation. It is not recommended to bring young children, as they can distract from the experience. If you have any questions, let me know. I'll be sending home a reminder next Tuesday.

SCIENCE UNIT TEST THIS FRIDAY!
The most recent notes have been uploaded. Students also have a handout of both Mohs Hardness Scale (4th Grade Standard) & The Rock Cycle. Friday's test will be comprehensive, including everything we've studied and previously tested on. Please have your child review all notes, and their previous tests, as some questions on this week's test will review the same content they were tested on previously.

Social Studies QUIZ this Friday
This Friday's quiz will be a "slenderized" version of the test your child will be taking next week. This week's quiz will only be based on the notes they've taken so far, which are posted on this website. Next weeks test will be based on this week's notes, plus new notes. The new notes will be based on the Native (Indian) Tribes of California. They are currently researching that information.

NOTE TAKING TIME!
It's time for your child to develop the study habits of taking notes and using them to prepare for tests. Our first two pages of social studies notes are up on the website. See "Study Guides for Science and Social Studies." Also, I want to thank the efforts of the students and their parents for having a "Turnout" of 100% on the assigned math homework from last night. AMAZING JOB-Let's do it again for Friday!
09.20.11
In today's Take Home Tuesday Folder (THTF), you will find copies of work completed by your child. This includes tests. Generally, you will find spelling & math tests, homework, and assorted language arts work sent home on Tuesday. Other subject tests will come home on Tuesdays as well. Our first Social Studies test will be next Friday, September 30th. The students are to study their notes for tests. Tests are based on the notes and discussions related to the subject. I also post copies of the notes on this website, usually within 72 hours after they are taken in class. This is not meant to be a substitute for note taking, but rather a means for parents to see what we are covering in class, and for students that may have been absent. To promote learning and good study habits for this year and beyond, I implement the following policy:
If a student is absent, it will be their responsibility to get missed work from their teacher(s). Assigned homework is due even when a student is absent. Of course, a reasonable amount of extra time will be allowed dependent on the situation. It is always expected that students make-up missed homework.
If your child is absent, please call the office and request a homework packet. I will have it in the front office by 3:30 PM.

Thanks for checking your child's homework. Today, a little more than half the class completed last night's math homework. With your help, we can make that number 100%.
09.12.11
This is our first full week of school. "Formal" homework starts today. In their backpack, your child should have a homework folder with their spelling packet, math book, math spiral, & binder reminder. Please check your child's binder nightly (or this website) to see exactly what he or she has assigned. Spelling packets are due on Friday. This week, they are self-paced. That generally won't be the case. Math homework is always due the following day, and there will be a test on Friday. Thanks for your help in making sure your child completes their homework each day. This "Practice" will help insure success throughout the school year.
09.08.11
