ACCELERATED READER

What Is The Accelerated Reader?

Accelerated Reader is a program that encourages children to read by earning points for the books they read. It
evaluates reading comprehension by asking very specific questions that require them to pay attention to details.
Therefore, it is also a great tool for the parents to target appropriate reading level books and encourage further reading
and diversity of choice, eventually leading the children to become more interested in increasingly challenging books
and discovering the great classics of literature.

How does it work?

Each book in the accelerated reader program scores a certain number of points. The questions are multiple choice. In
order to earn points and pass the quiz, your child must answer at least 60% of the questions correctly. Each quiz helps
him/her accumulate points.

How does my child take a quiz?

Your child takes a quiz by logging-in on the computer at school only (classroom, library, or computer lab).

READING REPORTS

I will be using the monthly AR student goal as my basis for giving a reading report grade this coming year. I will be
checking the monthly printout from Mrs. Cox to see how each student is progressing. Based on the total points
and/or percentage for the given month, I will render a grade. Listed below is the grading scale.

4
Earned required number of points for the month (student goal)
       At least 85% average correct
Book level average falls within the student Zone of Proximal Development
3
Student has completely met two out of three requirements
2
Student has completely met one out of three requirements
1
Student has met zero out of three requirements
