How do I stay updated on my child's progress?

Grades are available online. You will receive the information to
look up your child's grades from the school. If you do not
receive the
information, please contact me. Grades are updated at the
beginning of each week. Once graded, all assignments/ tests are
put in your child's file in each
class crate. Your child will be taking their work home in the
communication envelopes every Wednesday. You can also request
your child has their teachers fill out a weekly
progress report. Forms are in the office. Anytime you would
like to meet,
just send me an email or call, and we can arrange a conference.

How does AR work?

Your child takes an AR test at the beginning of each trimester to
find out
what their ZPD (zone of proximal development) is. Point goals
are given based
on the ZPD. Students read AR books within their zone and receive
points based
on the percentage correct and possible points for that book.
Students strive
to meet the point goal for each trimester, which is part of
their reading
comprehension score. Students who achieve their goals begin to
increase their reading comprehension. Some students have moved 4
grade levels in a school year.
If your child is not passing quizzes, they may do one of two
things. Read a
book lower in their goal, or write a question after each chapter
they read.
The questions can then turn into a practice quiz before they take
an actual test. You may check on your child's progress through
the Accelerated Reader website.

How do I schedule a meeting with my child's teacher?

Email or call the teacher, and then they will schedule a
meeting. Please
indicate what works best for you, what the meeting is about, and
if you would like other
teachers present. We have over 100 students in 6th grade, and
scheduled meetings are much more productive, then showing up to
your child's class without the teacher given time to gather
information.

1. What has been your favorite part so far? Why?

2. Who is/are the main character(s) in the book? How would you
describe them?

3. Have the characters faced any problems(conflicts) in the book so far?
If so, tell me
about it. Have they been able to solve their problem? How?

4. Tell me about the book. (Summarize! Not all the little
details!)

5. Where does the story take place? Describe it in your own
words.

6. Ask this only if they are almost finished with the book.
Would you
recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

7. Who is the main character in the book? Do you know anyone in
your life
that reminds you of the main character? Why?

will happen
next?

When can my child take an AR quiz?

The library is open before and after school, and also fifteen
minutes into
lunch. Your child needs to have a signed reading log, and their
student i.d.
to take a quiz.
We also go to the library as a class once a week. We are
also working on other oppurtunities for students to take quizzes.
