Homework April 12—18

Notice that the days for homework go through the weekend.  One of the main jobs of this week will be for you to finish taking notes on the history book you were given the week before vacation.  There will be some time in class each day, but then you will have to also work on taking notes at home.  On Friday, April 16, you will be given an outline to help you organize what you have into a paper about this subject.  We will work together to help you think about how you want to order your notes, and then you will write the

draft of your paper.  You will also be given a rubric, which will help you write the final draft of the paper.  Follow the rubric to get all of the points—The final paper is due Tuesday, April 20, 2010.

Math—Monday: http://www.321know.com/dec54ax2.htm

This is multiplication.  You will probably need paper and pencil to do 30 problems with 85% accuracy.  Due Tuesday.

Math—Tuesday: http://www.321know.com/dec54bx2.htm

These problems are a little longer.  Again, you need pencil and paper.  Do 20 with 80%--85% accuracy.

Math—Wednesday: http://www.321know.com/dec56bx2.htm

These are division problems.  Do 20 with 80% accuracy.  Use paper and pencil—Watch your decimals!

Math—Thursday—Two sites, 30 problems:

What’s missing?  Do 20 problems with 80% accuracy and…

Homework: March 29—April 2, 2010

I will not be at school this week.  I have a workshop at the district office.  Homework club kids, you will have to get help from your parents because I won’t be there.

This week you will be practicing some life skills that will help you solve problems in the future.  Read the directions carefully for each one, and then start the games.

 Internet Math:

 Monday--Go to: http://www.321know.com/g512_mx1.htm

Read the directions at the top.  This is all about converting hours and minutes to minutes.  You will have to multiply the hours by 60 (minutes) and add the remaining minutes.  Do 15 with 85% comprehension.

 Monday—Go to: www.321know.com/g5_316x3.htm

This is different. You need to divide by 60 to get the number of hours, and the remainder will be minutes

 Tuesday—Go to: http://www.321know.com/g5_316x1.htm

Memorize the little poem at the top, and then play the game.  Do this for 30 tries with 85% or better.  If you are falling under the correct %, you need to go back to the poem.

 Tuesday—Go to: http://www.321know.com/g5_th2dh.htm

Read the directions.  Do 15 of these with 85% comprehension.

 Wednesday--Go to: http://www.321know.com/g5_tmips.htm

This is a little tricky.  You need to pretend you are keeping the time at a race.  You will need to figure out minutes and seconds.  Read the directions carefully.  Play the game—30 problems with 85% accuracy.

 Thursday—Go to: http://www.321know.com/mny313x2.htm

Do 30 problems with 85% accuracy.

 Thursday—Go to: http://www.321know.com/mny211x4.htm

Do 30 with 85% comprehension.

What a big week! We will go to the Cabrillo High School aquarium the morning of Tuesday, March 23, and we will “March Through the Revolution,” on the afternoon of Thursday, March, 25.  Please have your costumes and lines ready to go!

Use paper and pencil to help you with your math if you need to.

Monday—Math: http://www.321know.com/g5_38cx1.htm

This is two and three digit addition.  Please do 40 problems with 85% accuracy or better.

Tuesday—Math: http://www.321know.com/g5_38mx1.htm

This subtraction is a little trickier, but you can do it.  Please complete 30 problems with 85% accuracy or better.

Wednesday—Math: http://www.321know.com/mul310x5.htm

This is pretty easy multiplication.  Do 40 of these with 85% or better accuracy.

Thursday—Math: http://www.321know.com/g5_310x1.htm

This is a little harder, but just keep track as you rename.  Do 40 of these with 80% accuracy or better.

Monday—Thursday: http://www.aaastudy.com/pro74bx2.htm

This will help you learn the properties of multiplication by heart.  Go over 20 of them every evening with 85% comprehension or better.

Take your science book home every night, but be sure to bring it back to school every day.  We will be doing reading and review in order to learn the material better.

Monday—Science: Read the chapter about compounds again (pp. 388-396).  Review the vocabulary that is highlighted in yellow until you know the definitions.

Tuesday—Science: Review p. 397 and the vocabulary to prepare for a science quiz on Lesson 5 “Compounds.”  It will be Wednesday.

Wednesday—Science: Using your science book, do pages 402-403.  Read Lesson 1 in chapter 8 (pp. 406-417). Take home your science book and workbook.  Write out all of the vocabulary words and definitions for this lesson, and all of the signs of a chemical change found at the bottom of 414-415.  This is due in the science folder on Thursday, March 25.

Homework--March 15--March 18

This is the week to get your costumes made for "Walk Through the Revolution."  If you have a prop or anything that is required for "Walk Through the Revolution," please get it and bring it to school.  Let us know if there is a problem.  Don't keep it to yourself if you need help.  Memorize your lines, and read your battle scripts.  It's a lot to keep track of.

This week's homework is the same as last week's.  You need to keep working at addition, subtraction and multiplication of fractions before going on to division.  We will be working on decimals in class, but it is important for you to master fractions before going on.

Monday and Tuesday—Internet Math: http://www.321know.com/fra66nx2.htm

35 problems, 85% accuracy.  Read the directions.  They want you to leave the answers as improper fractions, but you still have to simplify them.  Use pencil and paper.  It is hard to see how to reduce them without looking at them closely.

Homework—March 2—March 4, 2010

Tuesday—Math: http://www.aaastudy.com/fra66kx2.htm

30 with 85% accuracy.  Some of these are hard; you will need pencil and paper to add fractions with unlike denominators.

Wednesday and Thursday: http://www.aaastudy.com/fra66lx2.htm

30 each evening with 85% accuracy or better.  Again, you will need a pencil and paper.

For fun you might try out the 5th grade site at: http://www.mhschool.com/math/2009/ca/assets/factdash.html

Try doing multiplication one night and division the next.  See how fast you can get.

Social Studies—Tuesday and Wednesday:

Go to www.sbceoportal.org and log in with: crestview             and            cougars

Next click on the Rand McNally Map site, and look for, “Games and Activities.”  Play the game,  “Place the U.S. States” both on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Be sure to read the names of the capitals of each state before you paste it.  If you miss the place, the site will show you where it is, so you should be able to learn the ones that are not familiar to you.  Copy the completed map to hand in with your name.

Social Studies—Thursday and Friday:

Go to www.sbceoportal.org and log in with: crestview             and             cougars

Next click on the Rand McNally Map site, and look for, “Games and Activities.”  Play the game,  “Place the U.S. Capitals.”  This is fun, and if you have been paying attention the last couple of days, you will be able place many of them the first time.  Try to remember them, because one of the goals of 5th grade is to learn all the states and their

capitals.  Copy the completed map to hand in.

Science--Wednesday: Go to: http://www.harcourtschool.com/activity/mixture/mixture.html

This is a very fun site, but I found it a little frustrating because it kept “unloading.” Once you have figured out how to separate a mixture, write 1) the  mixture, 2) the tool, and

3) the method in order to get credit for the homework.  There are 4 mixtures you need to note. (Hint: The tool with a coil is a heating tool to boil water.)

There will be a long spelling review on Friday.

Also, there is a Unit 4 math test on Thursday, and some of you know (after looking at the chapter test results) that you did not really understand renaming fractions to subtract.  That is why we are spending the beginning of this week reviewing Chapter 4 and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators and mixed numbers.  Please take your book home if you need more practice.
