  • Thoughts on preparing for tests & Quizzes:
  • Test taking is definitely a skill that builds during the middle school years especially content-based assessments (as opposed to skill-based such as math). Since the exams are quite specific in scope, your student should continue to review class notes on a daily basis. It does not need to be a lengthily review session each night, perhaps 10 minutes, no more that 20. Students benefit most when they use those minute to turn their notes into test questions. For example:

    Class Notes:
Evolution depends on 1. Genetic Variation- differences in organisms; 2. Changes in the environment.

    Sample Questions:
What two things does evolution depend on?
What is meant by genetic variation?
Give an example of variation in trout.
    How might an environment change?

This is exactly how the unit assessments are built. If your student builds a list of possible test questions themselves, then learns the answers, they will be quite prepared to do well on the exams.

The CJSF club has started offering free peer tutoring in the library right after school every Tuesday and Thursday. Perhaps your student can take advantage of this resource. No sign up is required, and they can use the tutoring on an as-needed basis.
