Science Fair Project

Science Project

What is it?

All 5th graders are required to create and conduct a science experiment for the Duveneck Science Fair. You are going to be able to delve into a science or health topic of your choice, research a scientific question, and become an expert on your topic. Your finished project will be displayed on backboards in the MP Room or Library for the Duveneck Science Fair on March 17-20. You should also be prepared to share your findings with the class.

Please not that while the information from the Duveneck Science Fair states that projects are voluntary, you, as 5th graders are required to do the project. You will be graded by your teacher on how well your project meets the physical and experiment requirements outlined on the back. The Duveneck Science Fair will not have any grading or scoring. Because your project is being evaluated by your teacher, it will need to be completed and turned in a few days prior to the Duveneck Science Fair. Please take note of the due dates listed below for all 5th graders.

Please see your teacher right away if you encounter a problem or need help choosing a topic.

Science Fair Requirements

2 pages

You are going to ask a scientific question and design an experiment to answer that question. You should use the scientific method and remember to have only one variable (one thing changing).

Each of these will be a separate section displayed on your board:

1. Experiment Title, your name and date

2.   Question to be answered

3.   Hypothesis explaining what you think will happen before you do the experiment (your educated guess) and why you think that.

4.   Materials used

5. Steps/Procedure to be followed in performing your experiment

6. Variables of your experiment. List the independent variable (what you are manipulating) and the dependent variable (what you are studying).

7. Data/Observations displayed in a meaningful way.

á       This is often a good place to include tables, charts, graphs, or drawings.

8.   Conclusion explaining the results of your experiment and how the results compare to your hypothesis. Why do you think you got the results you did?

9.   Reflection on how your experiment turned out.

*       What went well?

*       How could it be improved?

*       Hints for someone else trying this experiment?

á       What would you try next?

10. Visual to included at least one picture, illustration, prop, or demonstration

11. ** Optional: Background Information to explain anything needed in order to better understand the experiment.

Physical Requirements

Your science project is mainly a visual report, though copies of your findings will also be put into a folder. This means you want everything displayed so that it can be seen and read easily. Try to make your display colorful and as interesting as possible. Here are some suggestions to make your display look great!

  1. Your experiment should be mounted on a freestanding three-sectioned backboard.

You may purchase one yourself or order them through the school for a $5 donation (optional). See Science Fair Entry Form to order backboards.

2.         You can paint (with brushes/sponges) or cover your boards to provide a colorful background.

3.         Make your title big, interesting, and easy to read.

4.         Each of the content sections listed above should be put on separate pieces of paper and titled.

5.  All information should be typed or written in ink on plain white paper

                        (Please no binder paper.)

6.  All sections should be bordered with construction paper, which you can get from the supply cabinet.

Sample Project Questions

(Try to have at least 5 options in the independent variables.)

¥Which type of liquid (tap water, distilled water, salt water, sugar water, Sprite) will cause the most rust to form on nails over a period of 2 weeks?)

¥Which type of paper (binder, parchment, tag board, tissue, or copy) will make a paper airplane fly the farthest (or longest, or straightest)?

¥Which placement of weights (on nose, tail, right wing, left wing, none) will make a paper airplane fly the farthest (or longest, or straightest)?

¥Which type of liquid (tap water, distilled water, salt water, sugar water, Sprite, or lemonade) will cause a sweet pea plant to grow the most?

¥Which location ( in constant sun outside, in shade inside) will cause a sweet pea plant to grow the most?

¥Which type of material (cheese, bread, egg salad, tomato sauce, or jelly) will grow the most mold in 10 days?

¥Which kind of music (rock, rap, pop, classical, country) will cause peopleÕs heart to beat the fastest?

¥Which solution (sugar and water, brown sugar and water, slat and water, Epson salt and water, baking soda and water) will grow them most crystals in 2 weeks?

¥ Which solution (sugar and water, brown sugar and water, slat and water, Epson salt and water, baking soda and water) will have the highest boiling temperature?

¥Which liquid (tap water, distilled water, salt water, sugar water, tea, coffee, or  Sprite) will allow yeast to grow the most in 2 hours?

¥Which shape of clay (bowl, boat, kayak, open box, or flat lid) will hold the most weight in dimes  when floated on water?

¥Which exercise (running, walking, jumping jacks, dribbling a soccer ball, or doing sit-ups) will give me the highest heart rate?

Display Boards:  $5 Donation Requested.

All participants should use a PTA-provided display board.  The suggested donation to cover the cost of 1 display board is $5.00, if you can afford it. If you choose to donate, please attach a check to your childÕs entry made out to ÒDuveneck PTAÓ. Please use the PTA provided display boards so that everyone has the same display space.
