Projects

BOTH 7TH AND 8TH

PERSONAL TIMELINE (20 points) Formative
Students are to create a timeline that will show them history isn't just something that has happened
hundreds of years ago, it is something happening within their lifetime as well!

7th graders are to use World events.... the massacre in Norway for example. They can use any event
within their lifetime, so... The bombing of Hiroshima during WWII can not be used. They must have 7
historical events -- none in United States.

They are also to include 7 personal events, making an "All star team" or 1st pet are examples. Years
are essential, not month and days.

Once last component is to have a collage of pictures that describes them on the top portion. I should
be able to look at this and get a sense of what makes the student who they are. For me, I would have
Lake Tahoe, Diet coke, the Cowboys...

Oh, yes.... on the back of this paper, I would like the student to answer the following questions:
Name, telephone, email, favorite thing this past summer as well as least favorite thing, how would
their friends describe them to me and what about parents? Also, is there anything I need to know
about them that would a =difference in class?

8th graders will be the same format, except instead of world events, they must use events that have
happened here in the united States within their lifetime.

Please read the guidelines for 7th graders and just substitute US events for World events. You will
need 7 events. You must also have 7 personal events and yes, the collage too!

Please differentiate between the two timelines (the historical event and the personal events) some
way (e.g. colorcoding, font) I would put the collage on top and the 2 timelines on the bottom.

Rubric is 5 points for the collage, 5 points for the history timeline, 5 points for the individual timeline
and 5 for answering the questions on the back. Total 20 points -- Formative.

8TH GRADE

ROAD TRIP PROJECT (50 points)

This project has to do with our Geography standards. It's important to know the states
and landmarks that we will be using throughout the year.

The objective is for the student to research several points of interest and plot them on a
map as they learn their states. The goal is to improve the students comprehension of
United States when they take their states test.

Lesson is as follows:
You will be taking an imaginary road trip across the United States, having to visit
several areas.

3 national parks
3 landmarks
3 sports teams
3 buisness corporations
3 places of interest to you

Be careful not to take an impractical trip (you will want to make a forward movement
and not to go up and down and back up and downs across the states).

The rubric will be attached to the back of the handout. As soon as we can download
our worksheets to this website, I will attach.

A handout and map will be given out in class. An almanac and atlas will be handy to have on the
side. Coloring utensils and neatness are a must. Be creative.

COLONIAL BROCHURES (25 points)

Make a brochure on 3 colonies of the same area (Southern colonies, Middle colonies or New England
colonies).

Brochures must have three parts to them.
The first being the historical background of the colony: i.e Who founded? When? Reasons founded?

2nd part should be state information like climate and geography, state bird, state motto, ect.

The 3rd thing should be why people would want to come to that colony today. More of a travel
brochure.

Each part will be 30% of the grade. Creativity and neatness will account for 10%.

NATIVE AMERICAN PROJECT

Open ended project due ____________. 50 points with maximum of 20 points extra credit
This project has been designed for the creative student and chance to express what
they have learned about native Americans. We will be discussing the trail of tears, the Cherokee, The
Nez Perce, The Apace, The Sioux, Reservations, Custer and several customs of the Native Americans.
If the student has something else in mind that is dealing with Native Americans, then by all means,
go for it. Again, this is an open ended art project.

The project should be on poster board, good visuals and limited amount of writing. I
should be able to glance at it and know what you're project represents.

Do not cut and paste. Extra points given for creativity!

Pioneer Journals (60 points)

This is a journal written to Mr. Tagert about your journey you have chosen.

You should have 6 entries in all.

Entry 1 should include the route, date, mode of transportation, why you are leaving, and the length
of time that it will take you to get to your destination.

Entries 2 -5 should be along your trail sharing your hardships and sketching your landmarks that
you see on the way.

Be sure to have entry 5 on the last leg of your trip, clearly stating whether you took the Mormon,
California, Oregon or Sante Fe Trail.

Terminology of the food and slang been used during the time should be used.

1800's INVENTIONS
On one piece of 8x 11 or 11x 18 paper, must research 4 inventions that took place from 1830-1900.
Each must have an illustration, the name of the inventor, time it was invented and how it changed
american culture.

This is worth 20 points.

5 extras
Propaganda poster

The students will be doing all of the above separatly and throughout the month. Towards the end of
the Civil War unit, we will put togther the newspaper with one other partner.

FINAL
Week of May 30th - June 1st

Three choicesÉ pick 1

Choice A
Comprehensive Final
This final is approximately 200 questions with the majority of them being fill in the
answer. This is similar to a test that one would take to challenge a course. It will take
most of the three days to complete and is usually preferred by those who tend to have
a great memory in recalling facts.

Choice B
Oral presentation
This final is becoming a person in the time era that we discussed this past year. From
Leif Erickson to Andrew Carnegie, you become that person (speech should be in the "I" format).
Research the information
on the individual and present a 5-minute speech. Speech should contain the
following:

	Why important
Events going on in that time
What would have happened if not alive

Bring in props / visuals and get dressed for the part for extra credit! Don't forget that
you are the person so the presentation must be memorized. I will allow cue cards if
needed.

Choice C
History timeline
A history timeline of what was learned this past year. It must go in chronicle order of
the units we discussed. Be sure to have at least 5 events per unit.

Units in order are as follows:

	Geography
	Exploration
	Colonization
	American Revolution
	Constitution
	War of 1812
	Manifest Destiny
	Westward Expansion
	Civil War
	Reconstruction
	America the Giant

Should be creative and neatly done. Have illustrations. Please bind it so it stays together somehow
