What is AR?

Your child has taken a test to determine their individual comprehension
level. Students may read and take comprehension tests in class to earn
points towards levels in our schoolwide AR club. There are incentives year
round and a BBQ at the end of the year to reward students'efforts. We
do check ALL books before allowing students to take a test so that
it is within their range.

Is homework accepted late?

We will accept homework whenever it is turned in. There is a participation
grade on the report card for homework, so we will note if it is turned in
late often. Students may complete unfinished work, including homework during
recess recovery.

How is fluency graded?

Students practice fluent reading all year long. Assessment of their fluency is
done 3 times a trimester. This is what we call a "cold read". Students are
expected to read a passage that they have not seen before. They are timed for
1 minute and they read as far as they can. We count all the words that are
read and then take off words that are read wrong or skipped. This end total is
their fluency.
Fluency grades are an average of the 3 reads that they do during that trimester.
