Beatty - First Quarter 2009 – Marek

Once again we are very excited about having two fourth grades and the
opportunity to work together. We will also strive to create a unified grade
level by doing as many things as we can together. Your fourth grader
will benefit from this cooperation. Please look over the quarterly
newsletters carefully. We will not only tell you what we will be
studying but we will also include important information you will need
to know about upcoming events.

Absence Policy: Please check the student handbook to review our
absence policy. We will be adhering to the make-up work policy as stated
in the handbook. If you are planning an extended vacation during the
school year, please give us about 1 week notice. Work for the days you will
be absent will be given to you the day before you go and will need to be
turned in the day you get back from your vacation.

Homework: Please read and sign the Fourth Grade Assignment Policy. Please
check the Assignment books to see what homework your child has. The first
day of each week you will receive a sheet with test information
and other important messages. Be sure to look for it.

Note: We will be having a Sacramento Trip information meeting for parents on
September 15 at 7:00 PM in the ECS library. This meeting is very important.

Bible: We will begin by studying the attributes of God as we learn about
Moses and the Israelites. Remember we are using the New International
Version of the Bible and expect every student to have a copy to keep in their
desk at school. We will send home memory verses to be worked on each week.

Language Arts: (Reading, English, Spelling) We will cover our first core
literature book, The Island of the Blue Dolphins, by Scott O’Dell. Please
remember that each child should be reading 100 pages a week to make reading
goal. This reading should be part of their homework each evening.

We will be covering several research skills such as using a dictionary and
understanding parts of a book. We will study sentence structure and parts of
speech. We will practice basic reading and writing skills and understand the
relationship between both. Dictation sentences for the spelling test will
come home each week with the memory verse.

Math: We are going to use the A Beka Math curriculum again this year. We
will be reviewing addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts.
We will study place value, 2 and 3 digit multiplying, measurements and
fractions. The A Beka program is fast paced but has daily review built in.
Your child will benefit by practicing with you as much as possible.

The Math packets for memorizing multiplication tables will be due
on October 23. This assignment is worth 2 test scores.

California History: The social studies curriculum, Oh California, is a
comprehensive study of the state of California including geography, history,
and the social and economic development of our state.

Science: We are excited to have the Houghton Mifflin California Science.
This text follows the State Standards and offers many hands-on activities.
The first chapter will be Earth and Geology.

Handwriting: Included in the Back to School packet is a copy of the Zaner-
Bloser alphabet for you to keep at home for reference to assist your child if
necessary.

As you can see we have much to cover. We covet your prayers as we
look forward to this busy and profitable quarter. Our prayer for
you is that your family will quickly adjust to our fourth grade program.
May God’s blessing be upon you.
