Bible: We will continue in our Bible One series which focuses a great deal
on building solid Christian character traits. We will also look at the great
Patriarchs of Bible.
Reading: We will dive into Phonics Charts 10-11, study compound words,
opposites, syllables, root words, and suffixes. Whew, what a mouthful!
Thank you for reading so faithfully with your child. This makes all the
difference in the world. Please keep plugging away at those Reading Goals.
We are keeping track in the classroom as well. Students should have read 450
pages or more. (We are1/4 of the way through the year). Keep that 2000 page
goal in sight.
Math: We are counting to the number 200, counting forwards and backwards,
counting by 2’s, 5’s, 10’s, and moving higher in the number families. Can you
tell we are learning a great deal? Keep practicing those math flashcards at
home! (See end of newsletter for hints). Math facts practice…6, 7 and 8’s
families.
Spelling: Please continue to help your child prepare for the weekly test.
Make sure your child uses the spelling practice sheet that comes home with
the weekly homework record sheet. Our spelling words will increase from
twelve to fifteen words per week.
Social Studies: Pilgrims and Indians will head up the department this month,
in preparation for the wonderful Pilgrim and Indian Day, November 20th! The
1st Grade classes are Pilgrims. Please mark your calendars because this is a
wonderful program you do not want to miss. Details will be released at
Parent/Teacher Conferences on items needed. We’ll use all available hands for
this event!
Science: We’ll continue on with our unit on the senses, though we will not
get far, since there are fewer Wednesday afternoons during November!
Homework: Thank you for helping your child with their Reading Goals and math
flash cards. It TRULY makes a
difference!
Thank you, to all of the wonderful parents who planned everything for Fall
Festival. Plus the yummy donated treats were a huge success! You’re simply
the BEST!
SPECIAL HINTS FOR MATH FLASH CARDS:
1. Separate addition cards from subtraction.
2. Practice addition more than subtraction, as it is easier and
subtraction skill will come better the more that addition facts are known.
3. Go through the addition cards, making a “fast” pile and a “slow” pile.
4. Practice one or two “slow” cards until the facts are memorized.
5. Put them in front of the “fast” addition pile, and start to go
through the “fast” pile cards. After passing the “slow” cards you just added
to the pile, do not put them down or at the back of the pile: put them a few
cards back in the pile again and again. That way your child will see them
several times throughout the course of going through the “fast” addition
cards.
6. When the “slow cards” become “fast” cards, then work on one or two
new “slow” cards and incorporate them into the “fast” pile as you did in hint
#5.
7. Repeat steps 3-6 for the subtraction cards.
8. If you want to mix addition and cards, do it with only “fast” ones,
and only for extra practice in watching signs. While each newer set of facts
is learned as we come to them in school, keep these new addition facts
separate from the new subtraction facts, as they will be harder and not well
known.
HAPPY MATH PRACTICING!
