Ch 8, Video: "Structures of Plants"

 

40 Multiple Choice (M.C.) Past class averages not available. This is a conceptually rich and definition-rich test and is usually considered "harder, but not as hard as Ch 2." It is crucial to have an overview of photosynthesis as well as its implications and its details. You may use a 5"x8" notecard on the test. Add any hand-written notes you wish - front and back.

 

Grade Warnings:Contains some "trick questions" - meaning that careful reading is necessary. Careful reading takes time so time management is also needed. This is our 4th test and it cannot be retaken. Tests comprise 50% of the class grade.

Content:

where photosynthesis begins, high-energy electron movement, electron tranport chain from photosystem I to photosystem II, difference in charges across the thylakoid membrane (hypertonicity of H+ ions), where light reactions take place, sunlight absorbed in chlorophyll within thylakoid membrane, pick out which step begins the light reactions, roles of pigments in PS I and PS II, how inside of thylakoid membrane becomes charged, how PS I and PS II differ, reactants and products for light dependent reactions, be able to pick out a step that is in light dependent reactions but is not in Calvin cycle, where does Calvin cycle take place, how does it differ from light dependent reactions, at beginning of C.C. the 5 carbon molecules are destabilized by what?, reactants and products of C.C., where energy comes from for each of the energy-dependent parts of the C.C, fates of all carbons entering, staying in, or exiting the C.C., know the location and importance of stroma, chloroplast, thylakoid, granum, chlorphyll, PSI, PSII, C.C., know details of experiments done by scientists van Helmount, Priestley, Ingenhousz, Calvin, photosynthesis equation (by heart!), sequential flow of electrons through photosynthesis, know factors that affect rates of photosynthesis, know structures and names of parts of ATP and how it changes through charging and discharging, know a little about NADPH.

 

2010 / 2011 Studying tips from students who score the highest on my Bio. tests.

Student #1

" A few days before I take the test, I take my guided readings and my notes and break them down into small sections according to the main topics and vocabulary. Then, I make a study sheet summarizing each topic and use that to review before the test."

Student #2

  • "Go through the guided reading section by section, covering up the answers and quiz yourself.
  • After each section, read through your notes and handouts that correspond with the guided reading section.
  • Mark anything you don't remember, understand, and/or need to review.
  • After doing this, go back and read."

Student #3

  • " After each day, review content and main ideas in the book. Be sure that you are not comfused and that you grasp the content.
  • After each chapter, there is a review/ main ideas/ vocab. section. This is perfect to read before the test.
  • Try to answer the questions from the chapter test. If you can answer them without hesitation, you're ready for the test."

Student #4 ( about taking the test)

  • "If you are stuck on a question, skip it, you might find the answer in one of the later questions.
  • Try to eliminate any possible answers that you know are wrong."

Student #4 (about studying)

  • "Do not study in one night, break it down into sections to do each night. Then on the last night, review all the sections just to make sure you know it."

2009 / 2010 Student Tips

Student #1

1. Study more than once a day.

2. Study with a partner and have them quiz you.

3. Study material that is hardest first. This forces you to go over it several times.

4. Get enough sleep!

Student #2

1. Re-skim through the whole chapter and reread notes.

2. Have someone quiz you on guided readings.

3. a. Reread sections that are hard for you to understand.

b. Next, try to explain those sections to another person.

4. Go to Prentice Hall.com and watch/do external links.

Student #3

1. Take large sheet of paper and fold it into 4 quarters. With pencil in hand, skim through the chapter in the textbook. For each chapter section, designate and area on the page for summarization as well as drawing whatever helps you.
