The Student Environmental Learning Facility (S.E.L.F.), a two acre "farm", is
used by teachers and students to integrate and extend learning through real-
life experiences. Students gain information about plants, animals, and the
environment through their personal experiences and the reading/researching of
various topics. They use this information to write about their experiences
and log their observations. They also utilize math skills to collect, record,
and analyze data. Our students and teachers participate in the real-life
experiences of planting in our "Golden Garden", caring for the plants, and
harvesting crops during the summer and fall. Parents and the community work
side-by-side with staff and students, providing expertise, tending the "farm"
during weekends and summer breaks, and coordinating our school recycling
program - the proceeds support the "Farm". The S.E.L.F. is truly a unique
learning environment.
The farm is a great place for scouts to work on projects to get their Eagle
Badge. Moms clubs and preschools enjoy coming into the farm to feed the
animals.
For information regarding either of the above, please call the school to set
up an appointment.
The farm is supported by PTO and the community, however donations are always
appreciated.
