Monthly News Letter

                           December Newsletter
Dec. 1st – Dec. 31st

Can you believe Christmas is almost here? This month we will be learning a
number of different things revolving around Christmas and the birth of Jesus,
including why we celebrate this special time of the year.

READING: By now “your” child should be able to recognize and provide for
you each letter and sound in the alphabet. If they cannot recognize the
letter, or provide for you the sound, you need to provide additional help at
home. With the leap of knowing the letters and sounds we are now proceeding
into emergent readers! Hip Hip Hooraaaayy!!! It is so exciting when they
point out the consonant blends and digraphs in a word! I am hopeful you are
seeing the same progress at home. We will strengthen our reading skills and
turn our learning focus to comparing various stories that we read. The
Christmas story is perfect for that. The base of the story is the same.
However, each author can present the story differently. If your child has a
favorite Christmas story book, I encourage them to bring it in this month. We
will read their books and decide whether it is the history of Christmas, or
the American Christmas.  Our learning focus in reading will be making
predictions and finding the setting in the book. We will also develop
further our handwriting, with an extra focus on capitalization and
punctuation.

LANGUAGE TESTS: We will continue testing using dictation. We will be using
our Rainbow Words to create sentences. I will be emphasizing the importance
of line spacing and spelling. As a reminder if they are forming their letters
from the bottom to the top, please erase the letter and have them restart
again.

MATH: We will proceed with number recognition 1-50, as well as handwriting
numbers (1-50). Your child should be able to count to 50 by December with
little or no mistakes. We will also continue learning about money (penny,
nickel, and dime), patterns and problem solving, as well as reading graphs.

SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE: We will discuss needs versus wants of people,
including earning money by working. We’ll also be looking at birthdays
around the world, especially Jesus’ birthday!

BIBLE: We will be learning about the Nativity and why Jesus’ birth was so
special. Remember to send in your offering on Tuesdays. Thank you.

ART: We will be creating several different Christmas related projects.

**A quick reminder to tally and add up your monthly reading logs.  For every
100 books – they read – or you read to them -  awards will be given out. 
