Announcements

Welcome to first grade. I am so happy to be your child’s teacher this year. First grade is such an exciting year!!!!

A significant part of first grade is developing reading and writing skills. During class we will have reading groups, read aloud time, self-selected quiet reading time, and a home reading program (Book It sponsored by Pizza Hut). They will be writing everyday. They will be learning about spelling, phonics, and word families.

Our Bible stories will include both Old and New Testament stories. They will also be required to memorize one Bible verse each week. At first they will recite them to me. Eventually they will be required to fill in missing blanks with words from a word bank on a Bible memory quiz.

We will continue building our math skills. We will be working on addition, subtraction, place values, money, measurement and time. To develop math skills we will have timed tests on basic facts.  We will begin with addition facts with sums less than 10. We will then practice subtraction with differences less than 10. We will also work with sums and differences up to 20. This will be beneficial to them in the future to be able to add and subtract as quickly as possible. I will send home the addition flashcards right away and the subtraction flashcards later this year. USE the flashcards to practice!

In science we will study plants and animals, weather and seasons, magnets, and earth’s land and water. We will also learn about developing healthy eating habits and taking care of our bodies.

In social studies we will study many interesting things including our community, reading maps, voting, and American symbols.

We will use the computers  to develop our computer skills as well as enrich our math, language arts and science curriculum

I will answer any questions on first grade information night- Tuesday, August 23. I’m looking forward to working with you to make this a wonderful year of learning for your child.
God's blessings,
Mrs. Prull
