All Library books need to be turned in now as we are finished going to the
library for this year.

Friday is the end of the trimester.  All late work must be turned in.  Please
turn in the Worship attendance papers on Monday.

Class Spelling Bee:  We all did a great job on the class Spelling Bee!  With
ten kids still in the run and having gone through all the words for the year,
I then went into the children's dictionary for more words. It was a little
more challenging and we did have some tears but got through it!
3rd Place: Tie between Haley M & Erika
2nd Place: Hailey S.
1st Place: Alana
Congratulations to all!  Mrs. Shelby is proud of you!

End of the year party:  If you are able to help with the class party on May
31st in any way, please contact our Wonderful Room Mom, Michelle Rivera!
Thanks!

You will start to see things come home that you haven't seen for awhile.  If
your child tells you that they need to stay home, they are correct.  It is
about time to start cleaning things out.  God bless!

We are on the downhill slide now...still have work to finish so you should be
doing Reading every night and math homework every night. Routine and
structure
is so important so we will keep it going.

We had a great time on our field trip!  Thank you to all the parents that
chaperoned!  We brought back everyone that we came with! The bus tour was
super!  Because it was cool down there (mid 60's) the animals were up and
active.  It was so fun to listen to the kids, they were so excited!

A Blessed Mother's Day to all!

finished with their book and will take a test on it in the Lab on Tuesday.
For those reading Junie B. Jones, Lions at Lunchtime, or Arthur - they will be
reading two chapters a week (starting this week) because we have more chapters
than we have weeks left of school.  So chapters 5 & 6 this week.

Sharing this go round:  Because of my pet allergies, instead of bringing a
pet, I would like you to email me a video of your child's animal or pictures

Week of April 16th

No Spelling this week
April Calendar: on this website
Anthology Schedule: on April calendar
Chapter Books: Chapter 3 due Friday
Book Report Due: May 2nd (Early Bird Due Date Thursday, April 26th)
Zoo Field trip: Thursday, May 10th (do not order hot lunch
on this date)

Mid-terms were sent home today.  Please sign the envelope and return on
Monday for 20 stamps on your child's stamp card.

Book Fair: The book fair is all next week in the new library.  The new
library is in classroom 3B.  Check it out.  We will go to the book fair during
library next Tuesday to write our Wish list. That means we won't be returning
or checking out any new books till the following week.  I will have a Wish
list posted as well.

AR:  I am letting some of the children check out AR books again and take
tests
on them.  I am a little anxious about this because with our Anthology (with a
story due every day) and a chapter book, our plates are pretty full.  I am
concerned that adding one more thing for some children will be too much and
their chapter book work or anthology work will suffer.  I will talk with the
kids and decide with them who can be working on AR again and who should wait.
We will get our last anthology in a couple of weeks and the stories are a
little more difficult than what we have now. As always, you can have your
child read other books from the book fair or public library,...at home.

Earth Day Poster Contest: Hailey S. and Ben's posters were entered into the
Earth Day poster contest.  We are still waiting to hear if they are one of
the ten finalist.  If not, you can view their posters in the children't area
of the public library!  Good Job, Ben and Hailey!

We had Mrs. Hartmann from the Water District come out on Wednesday to teach
us about using water and not wasting water.  She did a great job and the kids
loved her! Ask them what they learned!

Tom Sawyer Play by CYT a great success!  We all seemed to love the play that
we went to on Thursday.  Because we were the youngest group there, most were
3rd graders, we got front/middle section so we could see.  The kids were
pretty much mesmerized the whole time.  It is a great performance and your
child brought home a buy one get one free ticket that you can use for this
play or any other that they do.  I hope you are able to use it!  Thanks to the
parents that went, we had a great, safe trip!

Memory: You may have noticed that as promised for our last trimester, we will
have two memory verses per week.  Unfortunately I do not have enough time in
the week to promise to work with your child on every verse.  Hence I need you
to go back and practice with your child so they can be successful!

Spelling: As I have been telling the kids, all spelling words on a test must
be spelled correctly, no incorrect capitals, and no reversals.  I do remind
them during the test as well.

ABC Order: Our change in memory and spelling are all part of making our
transition into second grade a little smoother.  This is also something we are
starting - to help with our transition.  We have been working on it in class a
few times.  It is a hard concept for some but will come.  If you get the
chance to work on it, I would appreciate it.

Inappropriate talk:  We've recently had a little bit of inappropriate talk in
first grade. I have been very serious with them and told them this is
unacceptable.  As far as I am concerned for a first grader, words like "sexy"
and "hot" are inappropriate.

Field trip to Tom Sawyer: On Thursday morning we are going to the play, Tom
Sawyer.  This is a morning only field trip and we will be back by noon and
will have school in the afternoon. The permission slip was sent home on
Wednesday. Please sign and return asap.  As far as chaperones go, if you went
to Legoland, then I would like to take some of the parents that didn't go last
time on this one.  Thanks!

Chapter Books: Mr. Putter group and Playground problem group will take their
AR test on their book on Tuesday in the lab.  We were supposed to take it this
last Tuesday, but because we didn't have school that didn't happen.  I would
like to send home the new chapter book because I know they are soooo ready for
it.  If it does come home before Tuesday, please make sure your child still
knows their current one as the AR test is one they have to read themselves, no
voice quiz with it.  Thanks!

Friday: Half day on Friday because of the "All Lutheran Schools Spelling Bee"
that we host at our school.  This is a free event that starts in the church at
6:45pm that night.  The participants are in grades 3 through 8.  Come out and
support our spellers plus get your child hooked so that when they are in 3rd
grade they will be ready to compete.

Report Cards and behavior:  I've had some problems recently with behavior.
Not sure why but have had to become very consistent with them.  You will
notice more pinks coming home.  This also made a difference in their report
cards.  Fortunately they do have one more trimester to improve that grade.

Incomplete assignments:  I was surprised at how many incomplete assignments
some of the children had this last week. Please, please, please check
gradelink to see how your child is doing and what they haven't turned in.  If
you lost your password, call the school office and ask for it. I had over 20
assignments that I was having to grade last night so the grade shown on your
child's report card was correct.  Once your child is in 3rd grade, an
incomplete assignment can mean an academic detention.  Please help your child
start with good habits now. You are always welcome to come in and look in your
child's desk for missing homework.  Thanks!

Religion book: I recently sent home one of our religion books on the Christmas
story.  We have several books that we need to get through.  This one is very
important but it was covered in other ways in our lessons that I taught at
Christmas time.  Please keep it at home and read the stories if you get the
chance but you don't need to return it.

Art Wall in the Office: You may not know this but the art wall in the office
is done by the month by grade.  March is our month.  If you get the chance,
stop by the office sometime after March 4th to check out our art.  You will be
amazed!  These will come home at the end of the month.

Earth Day poster Contest:  We will be competing in an Earth Day Poster contest
that they city of Escondido puts on every year. In class we will be drawing
then coloring in a picture on this year's theme. I will send home the theme
and the front page of the paper that they gave to me.  I ask that you look
over it with your child and start mapping out an idea of what your child could
draw.  We will make it at school on a piece of 11 x 17 piece of white
construction paper. You are welcome to send in a sketch of it that they made
so that they can use it when they make their drawing.  It is on a light blue
piece of paper. I will try to the page and info on this website for you
sometime soon.

Lutheran Schools Week: Lutheran Schools week is right around the corner.  It
is the week of March 5-11.  Information to follow in the Principal's Pen.
Grades K-5 will be singing for the Saturday church service, March 10th at 6pm
(we will meet at 545).  Please put it on your calendar now.  Thanks!

Sports that your child is in:  As my husband says, I am a Number One
Spectator!  I love to watch sports!  I would love to watch your child as they
compete.  Please email me information as to when their game is, where it is
and what field if possible!  I would love to come and watch!  Thanks!!

No School: Monday & Tuesday, Feb. 20, 21
Ash Wednesday: Wednesday, Feb. 22nd
Report Cards go Home: Friday, Feb. 24th

Two Memory Verses: In preparation for second grade, we will have two memory
verses for our last trimester.  This is a change from last year, we had two a
week for a majority of the year.  Hopefully it has been easier for you with
just one till now.

Bump Up Day:  Bump Up Day was a great success and I am sure your child was
telling you about what they did in 2nd grade.  They came back very excited!

Weaning time:  I love my class!  Yes, I will say it again, I love my class!
If I had it my way, I wouldn't let them go to second grade next year!
However, because they have matured so much and gotten so smart, it is
inevitable.  I will miss them like crazy but need to let them move on.
However, they will always have a very special place in my heart and I hope we
are able to stay in touch!  That being said, it is time to start weaning them
from me and let them start thinking about second grade.  If you could tell
them something about how much they are going to love second grade.  Please
remind them that I will always love them and they can always come up at recess
time or in the gym and give me hugs.  Thanks for the help!

always come back excited and starting to think about 2nd grade.

Informational Night: Thursday after school it will be your turn to stop in -
in 2nd grade to find out more about 2nd grade and meet the 2nd grade teachers.
This is an Open House event.  Hope you are able to come! You are also welcome
to invite any of your non-Grace friends to come as well!

Valentine's Day Party:  Our class party will be Tuesday, Feb. 14th from 1:00-
2:15.  Come and help out if you like or send something in! We are looking
forward to a fun day!

Friday, Feb. 17th is a half day and the end of the trimester.  I do have a
math test planned and a spelling test.  If you know you are going to be gone
that day, please let me know ahead of time so I can make sure your child gets
those tests and then I can work on my grades over those days off.  Thanks in
advance!

100 Days of School:  We all had a fun time celebrating 100 days of school!
Mrs. Shelby had so much planned that we ended up doing some of the activities
the day before and will also do some the day after.  The kids looked great,
thanks for helping them find something to wear!  We also enjoyed all the 100
things collections that were brought in.
The special snack on that day, Trail Mix was very yummy and your kids were
surprised at how much stuff they liked.  You may want to review the email and
then ask them what they liked.   Fortunately we have extras so we will be able
to enjoy that for several days!

Vending Machines:  We do have two vending machines on campus once again.  The
cost for most of the stuff in there is $1.00-1.50.  If you would like your
child to get something from the vending machine, please take them there before
or after school.  I told them they could bring money on Fridays and I will
help them but I am hoping to eventually phase that out as well.  It is hard to
watch all the children on the playground and help them with their items.
Thanks!

the boxes and cards.  I have also put it on this website so please check it
out if you haven't finished that yet.  Please do not send in until Wednesday
for boxes and Thursday for cards, Thanks!

100 Days of School-Thursday: Sorry to be delayed in getting this out to you!
We will celebrate 100 days of school this Thursday, Feb. 9th.  Please
encourage your child to dress as if they are 100 years old - with uniform
shoes please. Free dress may be worn underneath if they choose to dress up,
otherwise they must wear their uniform.  They really do make great old people!
LOL!

100 day things-Thursday: Instead of sending 100 of the same thing, I would
like you to send in 10 items of 10 different things - (may be food items if
you choose)- 10 rubberbands; 10 paper clips; 10 hershey kisses; 10 small
stuffed animals; 10 marshmallows; 10 small cars; 10 barbies; and so on.  I
will read a book (100th day Worries)about this to them this week so it will
get their brains to thinking about what they should bring. This may be
different than what you are used to but because it is First Grade we are able
to take it a step further. Ask me for ideas if you need help! :=)

100 day special snack- Thursday:  I will send a note home of what your child
needs to bring for our special 100 day snack.  You may start sending in early
if need be but please label that it is for the 100 day snack.  Thanks!

Grandparents Day: It was so exciting to see all the Grandparents on
Grandparents day this year!  Thank you so much for sharing your parents with
me!  They were very nice and we all enjoyed our time with them.  I was excited
to have Grandparents Day on Friday this year so hopefully they were able to
stay the weekend with you!  We sang Frank Sinatra's You make me feel so young
for the Brunch and it was a huge success!  Thanks again!

Grandparent Letter: The letter was not part of Grandparent Day so if your
child's grandparent has not returned it yet, it is not too late.  Thanks!

Groundhog Day: Groundhog Day was a great day in first grade!  We started out
the day going outside with a partner and a piece of chalk and traced around
our shadows...two other times during the day we went to the same place and
traced our shadow again.. the kids were amazed at where the sun was each time
and how their shadow had moved!  Thank you Lord for a sunny day!  Later in the
day we made a pop up groundhog and then did our own little puppet shows. I
then video taped those that were interested, what great puppet shows!

Chapter Book Update:Please make sure your child is reading from their chapter
book every night and returning it every day.  We use it from time to time for
partner reading and it doesn't work so well when they don't bring it.  Some
have received a pink for not having it.  Please help them remember to put
everything they need for the next day in their backpack so they have it.

Healthy Snacks: Please make sure your child is bringing a healthy snack for
our morning snack time.  I haven't seen as much in fruits and veggies.  They
do receive chance tickets if they have something healthy.

Snack on half days or hot lunch days:  Please make sure your child still has a
snack on half days or hot lunch days.  They are growing and learning and
usually hungry!  Thanks!  Also may be time to include more lunch if they seem
to eat everything in their lunch box as they seem to be growing.

Valentine Class Party: Our class party is Feb. 14th, Tuesday from 1-215.  If
you would like to help or bring something, please contact our Room Mom,
Michelle Rivera (Lilah's Mom).

Thank you again for everything you do to make your child successful!  I
appreciate all your hard work!  Your child is so blessed to have you!

Remember starting 3rd trimester, we will have 2 memory verses a week so we can
complete them also plus this is one more step to make the transition into
second grade smoother. I won't be able to teach them these without your help.

Math Facts in a Flash:  This is the timed computer program that we do as a
school in the computer lab.  It is 40 problems in 4 minutes and 100% correct
to move up levels.  This is a website I found that has a similar timed math
fact test on it-
http://www.internet4classrooms.com/
Check it out so your child is able to advance.  It seems like once they build
a little confidence then they are able to advance pretty quickly.

Coming in March: Lutheran Schools Week; St. Patrick's Day and a visit from a
Leprechaun (please don't mention it to your child); a morning field trip to
the play Tom Sawyer...to be continued...:=)

Winter White Day: Friday, Jan. 20th
Stuffed Animal Day: Friday, Jan. 27th
Grandparents Day: Feb. 3rd (Half Day)

Winter White Day:  We will celebrate winter and snow on Friday.  Please

uniform shoes please) and
bring in one white thing (object, toy, stuffed animal...).  Thanks!

Spelling: We skipped Spelling 13 and are going onto 14.  We have been working
as a class at having better handwriting. The spelling page that we did on
Tuesday was very good for many so I took those ones, put a small candy cane on
them and hung them up.  As we were taking the spelling test on Wednesday, I
realized those were the same words...oops...oh well love the nice writing! :)

Legoland: Thank you to the parents that went along with us to Legoland!  We
had an excellent time and they did a great job!  Amazing Race here we come!

Matthew Giese and his family:  We have a new student that will be starting on

education! Last time we won this contest...hope we can do it again!

Mad Dog Math:  We have started Mad Dog Math again and I do believe this time
we are ready! On your mark get set GO!!!

My cell phone number:  I did write my cell phone number on your child's arm
for our field trip.  This was for safety reasons only.  I ask that you not
save my number but instead use the other means that I have given you to reach
me.  Thanks for understanding!

Wish List: a microwave (may be second hand); jumbo sidewalk chalk; a new ball
basket - doesn't have to be on wheels, but must have handles - we just need
